  • A reminder: this is the government that wants to ban encryption. In the Tories' dream scenario, data breaches like this will be happening to us every single day.

  • I went to Destination Star Trek in London in 2021. Overall it was a fun enough experience - saw a few interesting talks, met a few of the cast. Even though I ended up spending money I probably wouldn't have spent in a cooler-headed moment, my memories of the day itself were fairly positive as a one-off experience.

But it ended up leaving a nasty aftertaste for me. Most of the Discovery cast were there and they were promoting season 4 pretty hard (which was due to premiere the following week), but then a couple of days later CBS pulled Discovery from Netflix and announced it would now solely air on Paramount+, a service which was yet to launch in the UK at that time... I don't blame the Disco cast (whose social media reaction suggests they were as surprised as the rest of us) but it did make me feel like the franchise collectively had cashed in on UK fans' enthusiasm and then told us to fuck off.

  • I literally came here to say that Lee Anderson should fuck off back to Moscow. The guy is (wittingly or unwittingly) an instrument of Putin's foreign policy. Nice to see we're on the same page!

  • Since MI:3 (the point when they finally introduced some more settled and recurring characters - Benji and Julia in that one, followed by Brand in the next, followed by Ilsa) they've been consistently the best action movie franchise going. I far prefer MI to Bond or F&F.

  • I agree in that the stakes for 3 are incredibly low. It starts trying to save Rocket’s life, but that’s nowhere near the same level as playing keep away with an Infinity Stone, or stopping a mad god from destroying the universe.

I enjoyed it a lot (probably more than 2 but less than 1), and for me the smaller stakes were one of the reasons why it worked.

Marvel have done the huge stakes already and it's hard to top what they've already done - Thanos eradicating half of the universe. Much of what hasn't quite worked in Phase 4 so far is that they've been trying to do exactly that though - it's no longer about saving the universe, now it's about saving the multiverse, and after a while the stakes get so big as to be meaningless. When you've already done the massive stakes, bringing it back to a smaller scale and more personal stories about beloved characters seems like a smart way of reconnecting with audiences without trying to top the untoppable - at least for a while.

I cared about the stakes in this film far more than I cared about the massive multiversal stakes in Ant-Man 3.

  • There are some scale issues with it being a 'slap a bunch of stuff together' ship in canon. Namely the fact that the Intrepid-class that supplies the saucer is quite a lot bigger than the Maquis raider that supplies the hull and nacelles.

If done to scale, this ship ought to look more like a bobblehead.

  • I can see the narrative opportunity for that, but I think doing a 2nd movie that doesn't include both the stars would feel like a missed opportunity.

  • Mate, you're literally the one who showed up here saying that if you don't like this particular episode then you're not a fun person.

  • Don't go around being a dick to people who have different tastes to yourself.

  • I similarly do the Spock eyebrow a lot without realising it.

I also used to do the Data head tilt, again without realising I was copying Data, until someone pointed it out to me. They didn't actually know it was a Star Trek thing but as soon as they pointed it out I realised I was subconsciously copying one of my favourite characters.

  • I think if you liked The Martian then there's a good chance you may like Star Trek - it's filled with a similar spirit of optimism and science and progress.

My suggestion would be to start with Star Trek: The Next Generation (by far the most mainstream successful Star Trek show) and pick a few episodes to test it out. Don't watch in chronological order to begin with, as to be honest the first season (and to some extent the second) is very hit-and-miss.

Perhaps try these episodes first, and if you like it then you can go back to the beginning and watch a few more (or otherwise just carry on into season 4 and circle back to the earlier episodes later):

    • s1 ep25 'The Neutral Zone' - note this is not a top-tier episode but it involves some 20th century characters being introduced to the 24th century so might do some helpful introduction to the universe.
    • s2 ep9 'The Measure of a Man'
    • s2 ep16 'Q Who'
    • s3 ep4 'Who Watches the Watchers'
    • s3 ep15 'Yesterday's Enterprise'
    • s3 ep26 + s4 ep1 'The Best of Both Worlds (part 1 and 2)'

I think generally TNG peaks around season 4-6 so this would give you some highlights from the earlier seasons to test whether you like it, and then a run of stronger seasons to carry straight on to if you do want to keep going.

Another option could be to try Strange New Worlds (the newest show) which I suspect ought to appeal fairly well to new fans but is unfortunately only available on the Paramount+ streaming service.

  • But Henry Cavill has been in every episode that has aired. He's been replaced for the fourth season - so do you mean you stopped watching while Henry Cavill was still on it, or did you hypothetically stop watching the season that hasn't yet been filmed?

  • I mean, this is one of my favourite movies in years and this would have been a great post to make 15 months ago when it came out. But since then it's had great word of mouth from audiences, a fantastic critical response, and won a tonne of awards including Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actress, Best Supporting Actor and Best Supporting Actress at the Oscars.

Nobody is underestimating the brilliance of this film at this stage.

  • I watched the first episode shortly after it was released and haven't gone back to watch the second yet. I'm sure I'll get on to it but I've not been gripped at all - compared to the earlier seasons (especially the first which I binged without trouble).
