  • A leadership devoid of ideas and desperately throwing anything at the wall in the hope it sticks.

Before today this was one of the latest talking points from Liz Truss, who Sunak has not long replaced. Doesn’t seem a great look to be picking up policy from the still seething rival that you claim to have saved us from.

  • The TARDIS is a police box, not a regular telephone box. Very few of them survive now.

  • There’s not many phone boxes left in the UK of any design now.

I’ve seen a few converted into tiny libraries or art displays.

  • How many more “known secrets” are at large in the media? It seems nearly all of these scandalised public figures have that same thread in common - everyone knew they were a wrong’un but nobody spoke up about it.

  • A member of the UK Parliament recently resigned over sexual misconduct allegations, including groping. His name? Chris Pincher.

  • Agreed. the generative AI genie is out of the bottle, for better or worse, and there is no putting in back in. I understand a lot of the concerns people have around the technology, and I share a lot of them, but I don't see what bans and boycotts on a political or cultural level are going to solve.

Even if some countries were to ban or heavily restrict AI tech, others will not. The tech is becoming if not already portable enough to be surreptitiously used even if prohibited. Technological shifts tend to be inevitable and unavoidable, even when it they are very disruptive. There was no stopping the industrial revolution, the automobile, or the internet, and if there is enough real utility in it the same can be said for AI.

Trying to stifle AI will only cause it to develop in the shadows, which I think will only lead to worse outcomes if people become ignorant to to the technologies real capabilities and applications.

  • Home Assistant joins the trend for hyper minimalism, not sure I’m a fan of it myself.

At leasts it’s still fairly recognisable.

  • I use Continuity a for messages a lot, it’s a great feature. Ted Lasso isn’t a show about Apple though, they probably film it that way because they think it’s more natural. If they had to explain the characters behaviour it might feel like more forced product placement.

  • If you already using HA on your own hardware probably not. The Green is more aimed as a cheaper off the shelf solution for new users.

  • It's definitely progress, although leaks are only one source of methane emissions.

  • As I understand it, the Digital Markets Act came in to force in May of 2023. Apple was designated as a "gatekeeper" due to their restrictions on app installation this month (September 2023), and now has 6 months to comply with the DMA's rules.

The rules on messaging services for interoperability have been given longer periods to reach compliance.

I'm not sure if there any sort of appeals process that can be used to stall or reverse implementing the rules. Like a lot of EU acts, the DMA is rather complicated in the details.

  • Safari also supports content blockers. They are not as powerful as uBlock Origin on Firefox, but still better than nothing.

  • It's an endless game of cat and mouse, like many other tech "battles". Ad tech blocks the ad blocker, ad blocker unblocks the blocking, rinse and repeat.

Ultimately it's hurting the media industry a lot more than the ad blockers. All of those resources spent on fighting ad blocking could be used to make better content. Ad blocking, however, if often developed by volunteers who enjoy the challenge.

  • The EU Digital markets Act will eventually be fixing that, for better or worse.

Mozilla are already working on an iOS port apparently, just need Apple to (begrudgingly) open the doors.

  • 61? I currently have 442 open tabs.

  • As a student I had a retail job, the branch I worked at had the best loss prevention record in the whole company - because they had 2 very dedicated security guards. The big brains at company headquarters then decided because we had such a great record, we didn't need 2 guards, so they made one redundant and cut the other's hours. Shoplifting incidents skyrocketed.

  • There’s a small mistake in the article, macOS Sonoma release day of 26th September is a Tuesday, not a Monday.

  • It’s odd they bumped the AirPods Pro to “2.5” and didn’t mention it at all. Would have been a natural follow on from the USB-C segment of the iPhone announcement.

  • Apple should step up and release an official games controller. The third party options haven’t really created enough momentum, and selling PlayStation controllers has always seemed a bit odd.

An Apple controller could have interesting features like a MagSafe mount and Vision Pro integration, there a lot of possibilities left on the table currently.

  • Yes, it looks like a £100 price reduction. It’s rare that Apple products get cheaper in the UK, so at there was at least one surprise at todays event then.

My hands struggle with the 13 Pro, I don’t know how I’d manage with the 15 Pro Max. Anyone know how to grow longer thumbs?
