  • Anything that will run ESPHome or Tasmota is a safe bet. The ESPHome website has a list of supported devices here, and there is a Tasmota devices repository on the Blakadder website similar to the Zigbee one.

  • Mozilla expanding into social media feels like it will be walking a very delicate line regarding privacy. Things like Pocket have already been contentious enough.

They are putting a lot of emphasis on recommendation feeds and helping content publishers "build audiences", and of course there will ultimately be some form of (so far unspoken) monetisation. Mozilla are only going get so far with that until they start wanting user data, data which will be so temptingly convenient when it's tied to Mozilla accounts.

Chrome has already demonstrated the negative consequences of web browsers and web platforms becoming too intertwined. Maybe I'm just too cynical, but even with the best of intentions I'm not sure Mozilla can avoid the same fate here.

  • It's a PR blunder. "Our content moderation is so broken the CEO had directly intervene to remove a post praising the Holocaust" isn't a great message.

  • Yes, it shouldn't take a C-suite level decision to remove content praising Hitler and the Holocaust. The fact that it does suggests there is major disfunction in X/Twitter's approach to content moderation, which the article hints at but doesn't really explain.

  • Tim Cook is the perfect captain to keep the ship on a steady course and not rock the boat, but I'm not convinced he is an innovator. I sometimes wonder if Jobs selected Cook as his successor, because Jobs expected to overcome his health problems and return, and wanted Apple in safe pair of hands during his cancer battle.

That said, Apple only appears to be "failing" from the angle of the stock markets obsession with infinite growth. They are still an enormous company with high brand strength and large cash reserves.

  • Restrictions have also been placed on his computer use and access to the internet.

Guess he will have to stick to Photoshop 🤨

  • Don’t mistake the Netherlands for the Nether Regions either.

  • I grew up in a very flat part of England, flatness to me is the default and I get genuinely excited by hills.

  • We are still a long way from any sort of AGI from dystopian science fiction. But "AI" can still be very unintelligent but still be potentially very dangerous, and the sort hyperbolic doom mongering that keeps coming up in this discussions is distracting from that.

  • That's pretty neat, incredible what 3D scanning technology is capable of now. I wish more historic sites would do this, particularly the less accessible ones. The British Museum is planning to 3D scan its entire collection after the recent scandal with the stolen artefacts.

There's a free iPhone app called Scaniverse that can do 3D scans of objects and rooms, it's not quite as good as the tech used here but still fun to play with.

Royston Cave is an interesting place. The UK has a few mysterious subterranean places, like the Shell Grotto in Margate.

  • The authors angle seems to be more of “hate the game not the players”, and even the they aren’t entirely sympathetic to all of them. The more that search engines became the main entrance to the web, the more that website owners would seek to get closer to the entrance, and the SEO people illustrated in the article are the result.

  • There’s barely any engineering or even editorial oversight going on with some of the AI content appearing now, just piping the output of an LLM directly into a blogging platform. The initial prompt themselves could even be just be scraped headlines from elsewhere.

  • Loading... if you can still see this message, this post probably doesn't exist.

The link to your blog post seems to be broken.

  • It’s no mistake, trying to have a firesale of the land is nothing but deliberate sabotage.

  • I wish there were more colour options across the board. The iMacs have a selection of bright colours, but the Pro models are always a bit too serious. Pros like colours too!

  • This was the intention of Chrome from the start. A browser made by an advertising company was never a good thing.

  • Unfortunately there isn’t, at least not with Apple Music. It seems a really obvious continuity feature to add but Apple have yet to do this. It’s a shame as I regularly switch between Mac iPad and iPhone while listening to music and having to find where I left off each time is a bit annoying.

Submit feedback to Apple, maybe they will take action eventually.

  • 5pm PT is an unusual time, aren’t most events usually in the morning?

Unfortunately that’s also midnight in the UK, so I may not get to watch this one live.

  • If it's cheap enough it's worth a go. For anyone new to Zigbee, always check the Zigbee device database to check compatibility with your platform.

  • I use mostly Sonoff, Aqara and Ikea, but I have a variety of other brands as well.

Sonoff is cheap and reliable, a few of their sensors have a the odd quirk but have worked well overall.

Aqara have more features and a more elegant physical design, but can be bit more expensive - although still cheaper than some other brands. I have a lot of their temperature/humidty and contact sensors and they look nice on my walls and windows.

The one problem with Aqara devices is they don't properly follow the Zigbee standard, and don't play well with some other brands, leading to constant disconnections. They do work fine with Ikea devices however. I had a lot of problems until I split my Zigbee network into 2, one with only Aqara and Ikea devices, and one with all the rest.

I'm also using a few devices from Samotech and Aurora, who have some good UK specific Zigbee devices such as rotary dimmer switches and smart sockets.
