  • So now Windows bloat is extending to the physical keyboard itself.

Looking at the Microsoft blog post they haven't said exactly how they want keyboard layouts to change. So on a full size keyboard this could be either new key entirely, or replace an existing (and arguably more useful) key.

  • I still don't really get what people find so difficult about picking an instance. Most people seem to manage getting an email account, which requires picking an email provider like Gmail, Outlook, etc. Joining Lemmy isn't that much different.

  • I used to use cheapo tools, but I borrowed a Makita circular saw once and it was so nice to use in comparison that I’ve been on team teal ever since.

  • There’s some Bosch stuff in the UK. I’m a Makita person but I recently bought a Bosch glue gun and it’s the most solid feeling glue gun I’ve ever had.

Not a professional line but I also know a few people that love the Parkside tools from Lidl, they are good value home tools so I’m told.

  • Plenty of people hated Steam when it first came out, it was a controversial thing when games started to require it.

Steam has only become as popular as it is because Valve responded to much of that criticism, and improved it enough to become “acceptable” DRM in the minds of most gamers. People defend it because it came to work (mostly) seamlessly and offer additional beneficial features. Unlike many other far jankier platforms/launchers which have been developed with minimum effort as more transparent cash grabs.

A DRM free world be be ideal, but we rarely get an ideal world, so people settle for the least worst instead.

  • Google (or any other browser vendor) never forced anyone to rely on a web browser engine to develop desktop applications.

This is what happens when developers make trade-offs for convenience at the expense of control.

Also in Steams’s case the pre-Windows 10 Steam user base is also tiny, and may not be considered commercially viable to support regardless.

  • There was a time when software didn’t need an entire browser engine to run. We used to call them native applications.

Although looking at how small the pre-Windows 10 customer base is I imagine Valve would have considered it not commercially viable to continue supporting however easy maintaining the codebase was.

  • The problem is to tackle voter apathy, apathetic voters need to be given something to vote for, not just told to go the polls for the sake of it.

While I understand Starmer’s Labour’s desire to play it safe, at some point they have to nail their colours to something catching. Not being the other guy only goes so far, if there is concern about an unconvinced portion of the electorate not turning out there needs to be something to inspire them.

  • Cypher was right. Ignorance is bliss.

  • The distributed computing explanation for purpose of the Matrix doesn’t seem to make much more sense than the power plant one.

All of the nodes are continuously occupied by living in the simulation. Unless the machines had a desperate need to understand human society circa 1999, there is nothing useful the machines could do with all the brain power.

  • Changing the band connector would be would be a disappointment. One of the great things about the Apple Watch today is the wide selection of watch bands available. The stability of the connector has created a thriving band ecosystem. If a new connector is introduced the variety of bands will take ages to catch back up, and old designs could be forever lost. If one of the reasons to change the connector is to integrate electronics into the bands that will also stifle band availability, as manufacturing them will become more complex and expensive.

Hardly a great environmental choice either to have all of those old bands thrown away. There’s enough waste being generated already by the Lightning to USB-C transition, although at least USB-C provides benefits of better cross compatibility with devices in the future.

A magnetic band connector also doesn’t sound a great idea for durability. Compared to a locking connector, it’s hard to see how that would hold up during rigorous activity, and also seems like it would be easier for thieves to yank off of a wrist.

  • As generation models continue to improve we could end up in a world where it’s impossible to trust what we can see and hear in recorded media. Considering how central the media is to modern society in general, let alone politics, that’s going to have grave consequences.

There’s no obvious way to combat the deepfake threat either. The output of these generative models become harder to detect as generated by design. As hardware and software improves, it will also become easier and easier for people to run these models. There are already many image models that can already be easily run on a typical gaming computer. With how widespread it could become there is little chance of “banning” them.

I think one approach could be to instead focus on ways to verify genuine media rather than trying to detect or control the fakes. But with how readily some people will already trust obviously dubious sources of media, even that might not be enough.

  • Maybe it’s less about difficulty of use and more of the size of the paradigm shift. The Vision Pro could require a more hands on setup to help guide people through an initial experience which may seem quite alien, even if it quickly becomes intuitive after.

Customers that need prescription lenses would also probably benefit from in person setup as well.

  • Some albums work better in Atmosphere than others, some felt quite immersive while others were just weird.

I guess it will take time to figure out the best way to mix recordings for it. Stereo has been the dominant format in music for so long, unlike video (which has its own problems with surround sound now).

  • There seems be a lot more insects around this autumn and winter this year. I had an insect bite about a week ago, never usually get that in December.

  • I’ve heard some people claim the project would enhance the site by “hiding” the road. Completely ignoring the enormous amount of damage that would be done to area’s archeological significance.

  • Cut and cover is probably a lot cheaper. The government has already cut back HS2 to save money, I doubt they would want to spend it elsewhere no matter how damaging the current A303 project is.

They’ve got to pay for those future tax cuts somehow, cultural and archeological heritage be damned.

  • From what I’ve heard a lot of subreddits continue to exist but have lost some of their best contributors and mods. Some migrated to the fediverse, some elsewhere, others gave up entirely.

Despite being forced back open after the blackouts etc they are not the same as they were, the tone and quality of discussion has shifted a fair bit.

  • I see a lot of people saying they have to use a GUI tool for partition management, and I’ve never understood why.

Text based tools like parted are fairly easy to use, at least compared to other terminal tools the same people are able to use for other tasks.

What is it about partitioning that needs a GUI when other tasks don’t? Is it the visual representation of the partition layout? A general fear of borking a disk?
