  • Humans come hardwired to be a certain way, do certain things. Maybe they need to start AI off like that, some basic programs that guide learning. “Learn everything” isn’t working.

That's a good point. For real brains, size and intelligence are not linked. An elephant brain has 3 times the amount of neurons as a human brain, but a human brain is more intelligent. There is more to intelligence than just the amount of neutrons, real or virtual, so making larger and larger AI models may not be the right direction.

  • And, most importantly, there’s no Widget.

Not the first Apple first party app to lack widget support. The Home app only just got dedicated widgets in iOS 17.

  • Interesting to see this drop with a press release without much fanfare. Perhaps a sign of sports content coming to Apple TV+? There's been on and off rumours about them bidding for sports rights.

Disney are also trying to start a new sports streaming service with some other sports networks. It would be great to see more options in the area.

  • The development of LLMs is possibly becoming self defeating, because the training data is being filled not just with human garbage, but also AI garbage from previous, cruder LLMs.

We may well end up with a machine learning equivalent of Kessler syndrome, with our pool of available knowledge eventually becoming too full of junk to progress.

  • AI in science fiction has a meltdown and starts a nuclear war or enslaves the humane race.

"AI" in reality has a meltdown and just starts talking gibberish.

  • Research is one thing, getting from concept to production is another. There was a lot of hype about holographic disc formats years ago that was promising capacities from 100 GB to several TBs but they never actually made it to the market.

With the ongoing "death" of physical media playing out in the consumer space, it will also probably be hard for these esoteric disc formats to attract the investment needed to develop them. There might be some enterprise interest if the tech is stable enough for archival use I suppose.

  • If you familiar with Ubuntu and its derivatives, just use Ubuntu.

Ubuntu provides a server version called Ubuntu Server alongside the desktop versions if needed, and Ubuntu provides easy access to things like ZFS.

You can always switch in the future if you find you have server needs or preferences the Ubuntu doesn't suit.

  • Well this latest cultural storm in a teacup has got people talking about Golden Syrup, so I suppose their marketing department is doing its job fairly well.

  • SEO has been a plague in search engines for almost as long as they have existed. Unfortunately combatting it is an endless cat and mouse game, as there will always be some who will devise new ways to game the system. With how commercialised the web has become there’s enormous incentive to do so.

I’m also not convinced Google has much intention of really fixing it. They already have a monopoly on search, and as an advertising company are unlikely to want to upset the big media companies exploiting their search engine.

  • Well that’s a headline I didn’t expect to see this morning.

Regardless of the rights and wrongs of AI generated images, it’s quite concerning something like this makes it into a scientific journal at all.

  • But the plastic dino is a Stegosaurus…

  • And how the fuck does the rotting fish bag get through security?

  • Writing drivers is hard, especially with limited or no hardware documentation.

It still has a long way to go, but Asahi Linux getting as far as it has this quickly is impressive enough.

  • Hopefully this will strengthen AltNets and helps them compete against the bigger players. The UK sorely needs more competition in the market, and some promising AltNets are already struggling or have failed. Upp in East Anglia have already been swallowed up by Virgin, and I fear others may follow.

  • Yes, the change of focus is good news overall but there’s still reasons to be concerned about Mozilla. It’s good that they are moving focus back to Firefox from struggling ancillary projects.

But what they want to do with that additional focus could be a problem. Another round of gimmicks with some newer buzzwords isn’t likely to help Firefox.

  • Considering our current track record with building infrastructure, even if construction starts there’s a good chance it would never be completed.

New nuclear power would likely attract a far greater degree of the sort of budget scrutiny and NIMBYist political opportunism that’s already derailed HS2.

  • British Sugar had the only license to grow medicinal cannabis, at their location in Wissington, Norfolk for quite a few years.

It is of course entirely coincidental that British Sugar’s MD, Paul Kenward, is married to Victoria Atkins, an MP and government minister.

  • Frigate seems fairly popular among Home Assistant users for security cameras.

I think ZoneMinder is still going too which used to be the go to Linux option for that.

  • So a supposedly cutting edge $3500 device plus an additional $300 dongle gets a wired connection speed from the year 2000. USB 2 is 24 years old

    Welcome to the future folks.

  • In terms of privacy in public, the Vision Pro isn’t much different from Google Glass. Both have video recording capabilities, and both displayed some form of indication when recording.

The only real difference is that the Vision Pro is easier to spot in public due to the bulkier design.

It will be interesting to see if there will be similar “Glasshole” reaction to the Vision Pro once they are seen in public enough.
