  • The small phone debate is not just about the overall physical size, it's also about how reachable UI elements are when using a phone with one hand.

For one handed operation, screen size does matter regardless of bezel size. The larger the screen becomes, the harder it is for the thumb to reach the top of the screen because the top gets ever further away from the thumb.

  • I would hope that be the case, but I don’t have a lot of faith in it. Royal Mail wants to tear up the USO, because they claim they claim they can only be a viable business without it. The ultimate goal seems to be turning RM into just another commercial parcel courier.

They are being increasingly loud about this, and it wouldn’t surprise me if they eventually bend enough politicians around. The privatised water companies already managed that with the Tories wrapped around their finger.

  • All that effort to roll out barcoded stamps was well worth it then.

I wonder if this might be the beginning of the end for stamps. The privatised Royal Mail already wants to reduce or even drop entirely letter carrying in favour of parcels. I could see an inability to combat stop forgery another argument used to advance that, with phasing out stamps a way to discourage sending lettters.

  • Sounds a like better compromise between repairability and theft deterrence.

Having a service history available in Settings is also a good idea, especially for transparency in resale.

  • There's two main reasons to want a smaller phone. A smaller overall physical size so it fits better in a pocket, or a smaller screen so it's more reachable when used with one hand.

I suppose the new flip foldable phones might satisfy the first but not the second.

  • It seems crazy when a list of the 12 best "small" phones have an average screen size above 6 inches.

    PhoneScreen Size (in)
    Galaxy S246.2
    Xiaomi 146.36
    Google Pixel 86.2
    Google Pixel 7a6.1
    Asus Zenfone 105.9
    Motorola Edge 30 Neo6.28
    Apple iPhone 13 mini5.4
    Apple iPhone 156.1
    Apple iPhone SE 34.7
    Sony Xperia 5 V6.1
    Motorola Moto Razr 40 Ultra6.9
    Oppo Find N2 Flip6.8
    Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 56.7
    Average6.13

The iPhone 13 mini has also been discontinued, and the reviewer discourages the iPhone SE 3, describing it the "smartphone equivalent of herpes". So that removes 2 of the smallest of the "small" phones which makes the situation even worse.

  • The 8th of The Ten Commandments, Thou Shalt Not Steal, seems the closest direct answer to our question but also raises an age-old piracy dispute – is copying theft?

I'm no theologian, but considering the writing of Exodus is dated around 500 BC, and based upon much older oral traditions, and any formal idea of intellectual property being a much more recent invention, I don't think the context of the 10 Commandments would consider copying theft.

The comparison to Jesus and the loaves and fishes also seems quite apt. Jesus seeds.

  • The wording of the new App Store rules say developers are responsible for any software offered in an app, and there's been a bit of debate going on as to what that means in practice.

I haven't heard if any emulators have or haven't passed Apple's review process yet.

  • It's a real step up for managing Home Assistant. I was using it earlier to find some devices to reconfigure and it's a lot faster. The xtra panels in the UI feel a little cramped on smaller screens though.

I wish they would implement a proper permissions system next, the lack of control is the other admin bugbear of mine with Home Assistant.

  • I always keep Home Assistant as up to date as possible. Home Assistant keeps improving a lot. Month to month each update goes fairly seamlessly if HA is kept up to date, but the further it falls behind the harder it is to catch back up. Recent optimisation improvements have also made the update process faster.

If you can make the time it's worth the effort. Even if you have to "start over" somewhat there is probably a lot you have learned since that you can use to improve your setup.

  • South West Water also claimed it has no legal responsibility to keep the rivers and sea in the counties clean and clear of sewage

The fact that statement could even be made is pretty telling of the state we are in. It’s 2024, not 1524, dumping shit in the sea is something we should have long moved on from.

  • If the foldable screen could be more robust, and the fold could be truly invisible when unfolded, I could see it being useful for some people as a phone-tablet hybrid.

Unfortunately features like hardware kill switches will probably always be too niche for a mainstream flagship.

  • In the AI age we are going to need some way to have lasting likeness rights, in life and death.

There should be some sort of protection against having a persons appearance hijacked, especially for commercial purposes.

  • Quake 2 also had a Linux port, as did Return to Castle Wolfenstein. iD Software was one of the few early supporters of Linux for commercial games.

  • Return to Castle Wolfenstein also had an official Linux port in 2002-ish.

  • Invisible keyboard guy is missing a finger, guy in the top right appears to be missing a face.

The mess of cables is on point though.

  • One of my favourite games, it was a very impressive title for the Game Boy at the time. It had an interesting development story, it started as a Game Boy port of Link to the Past, developed in off hours as a sort of passion project.

I remember having to download a text file guide, with dungeon layouts drawn in ASCII art, to get through a couple of the tricky bits.

The Switch port is worth checking out too, the graphical style is adorable.

  • The delivery system, the Trident missiles, are still made by the US.

We haven’t had a nuclear-capable missile program since the 1970s.

  • Well at least we’ve been making all those investments in infrastructure to keep up. Oh, wait…

  • Once bitten twice shy.

I would like to believe the pledges were positive news. But Affinity has already broken their promise on acquisition, so I’m having a hard time now taking their word on licensing.
