  • Can't speak for Twitter as I wasn't really on it, but Mastodon I pretty much use for the same topics as I use Lemmy, except if it's a longer more discussion-wanting post it goes on one and if it's a short casual posts it goes on the other. Don't bother much with the home feed I just stick with my topics of interest.

Often, I'll post to Lemmy from Mastodon when something is relevant to both, which means I'm chatting to both groups at once in the replies.

Right now there's a communal crafting event going on over there with its own hashtag, and tons of people I've never interacted with before are taking part, so that's fun and a nice wholesome time.

It's just a slightly different format for talking about the same stuff, from my pov.

  • This has been a great instance since day one, and it's good to see you once again being so proactive. Thank you for the update!

There are downsides with all kinds of moderation, but ultimately most of us accept that the internet can't function as a true free-for-all. Absolutely in support of whatever you feel is necessary to keep the server safe, but please watch out for yourself too and make sure you're asking for help where needed.

p.s. anyone reading this who doesn't donate to the server yet, here's a reminder that that's a thing you can do.

  • I'm not well, and this is pretty much the first thing I've seen on the internet today but I'm also absolutely certain it's the only thing that can cure me. Looks amazing.

  • It works in Kerbal Space Program, it should work for real!

  • The gametime stats in Xfire were my first clue that I maybe needed to get off the PC once in a while and, as the kids say these days, touch grass.

Was still kinda proud of myself though. Albeit a sort of shameful pride.

  • Yep, we're federated. It looks like you were the first person from lemm.ee to search for and subscribe to /m/Greece, so basically what happens is you'll see new posts that get made but it doesn't automatically go back and fetch ones from before you searched it the first time.

If there are particular posts you want to chat in that haven't been brought over, you can search for the post URL to force them to be indexed.

  • It's already on Github although it doesn't look like it's as straightforward to narrow down as you might hope.

  • It does, but I think if the community mods mark a report as dealt with then it disappears from the server admin's notifications too. I could be wrong but pretty sure that's how I've seen it explained. Still worth a try ofc, you just can't guarantee who sees your report first.

  • The issue here is that there's a system for searching that was built with website use in mind, but all of the mobile apps have implemented search in their own special ways (or in some cases not implemented it at all). So where a couple of months ago we were able to confidently point people in the direction of the ! search (which is explained in the sidebar of communities on remote instances, so again fairly clear for website users), now it entirely depends on what sort of interface people are using and tech support is more complex.

But the general gist of what's happening, so you understand what's going on:

Your instance doesn't know about a community hosted elsewhere until at least one person from your instance has done a search for it. So in this case with vitahacks being so small, you were the first to try and access it from lemm.ee.

As you've seen, being the first to do the search means you'll first get no results, but then your instance will pull in and index the new community so it shows up after a short and confusing delay. Once someone from your instance actually subscribes to the community, that's when it'll show up in the All feed for all your instance-mates.

The specifics are gonna depend on which app you're in on any given day but I find that understanding the "why" of it helps cut down on frustration at least a little bit.

    p.s. Welcome to Lemmy!

  • That's what makes threads like this so interesting to me. I never got into Twitter(despite many attempts literally since it was first released) but absolutely love Mastodon. And sometimes I read these threads and just think...what?

But in reality it just comes down to your individual use case and whether the specific thing that Mastodon is actually fits that use case.

Until this thread, for example, I didn't know there was such a thing as a trending tab and I didn't know there was a problem seeing people's follows because it would never have occurred to me to look.

I use the advanced interface and, while I do follow people, very very rarely pull up the home feed. My columns are all crafting hashtags and my local feed because I'm on a crafting-focused server.

If you're into following topics, Mastodon is a great time. If you're into following people or you want to to kept up to date with the outside world then I can definitely understand not being a fan.

  • I for one will now be joining you in this crusade 🫡

  • It's 24 Hours of Cross Stitch weekend and I have about 100 episodes of Futurama to watch before the new season drops next week.

    So that!

  • You can't do it from the main community feed view, you have to click into the individual post you want to pin. Then there's a three-dot menu under the title and meta info, which gives you a dropdown that includes this option.

Obviously if you're on a mobile app the process might be different.

  • Yeah that checks out. Like I said before the federation issues are definitely still a thing and it does seem to be worse when you're trying to post cross-platform. Honestly not sure if mentions are even supposed to work, I know for example on Lemmy I can't DM a Kbin user (even though it looks like we can, but tested with my husband's Kbin account and apparently DMs to them just disappear into the ether? 🤷‍♀️) so it's possible we also can't mention each other. I have no idea though, just guesses!

I definitely do not envy the devs on either side with all of this work still to do to get both softwares stable, but especially feel for Ernest! Kbin was so new when the influx started, I can't even imagine the stress. Think I read that he has a lot of contributors helping out now though so at least it's not just him on his own trying to keep all the plates spinning.

    We'll get there, I'm sure!
