  • Well I really liked The Shape of Water so clearly what do I know about films 😆

  • Possibly IT Chapter Two. We not only walked out of the cinema, we also rethought our lives entirely and cancelled our Cineworld Unlimited memberships.

  • Ah hello friend, I feel your pain 😢

  • PeerTube has streaming capability but I believe it's a per-server feature so you'd need to find one that explicitly has that enabled. Don't know much about how that side of PT actually works from a creator viewpoint though, maybe someone else can add more specific info.

  • Like any other type of Fedi profile, it'll be blank with no content shown on Mastodon (or Lemmy) until it's federated with your instance. Which means someone there needs to be subscribed. Once that happens new videos will show up in feeds and on the account/channel page as expected.

As far as actually watching the videos goes, seems like it depends on your client. I know the Mastodon web interface gives you the embedded video to watch without leaving the platform, but can't speak for the various mobile apps.

  • Links starting with the ! symbol are generally the way to make instance-agnostic links on Lemmy, yes. That's been the case since I joined in June but not sure about before that.

But don't worry, you (or someone else on your instance) would have to actually be subscribed to the veronicaexplains channel in order for it to properly federate and pull in new videos. Just looking at the profile shouldn't do it.

  • Kind of surprised (and a bit disappointed) you didn't get more replies saying "I already pay". Which does admittedly support your point!

    p.s. I already pay.

  • Ah yes I'm on Liftoff too, I know the dev had to take some time out due to having newborn twins, which, to be fair IS probably a higher priority than fixing bugs with links. But it would still be nice! 😆

  • Bad wording on my part there, sorry, not really sure if there's an official term. But I don't mute the individual accounts, just check the "Hide these posts from home" option in the list.

So all their posts are in my search, but not in my actual day-to-day feed, if that makes sense?

  • Unfortunately a lot of mobile apps are still struggling with Lemmy URLs, not sure why. But these are working from lemmy.ml, just checked on desktop. Maybe you can log in to the mobile browser version and get them to work that way?

I do wish app developers would make this one a priority!

  • Yep I seek them out, follow them all and stick them in a muted list. Bit of work, but it stops me feeling left out on a Sunday and I still get to keep the benefits of being on a tiny server 😀

  • Yeah I recently migrated server and we tried the relay thing on my old one, which did help a bit with tags for active events like #NFL or whatever. It doesn't find anywhere close to everyone and tbh was janky and delayed at the best of times (not great for keeping up with live events, which is my main use-case) but it was definitely a huge improvement.

Haven't bothered asking my new admin because it seems a bit rude when I'm new to the server. But now we can make lists of people that are excluded from our home feed, so I can federate all the things without it cluttering everything up anyway. Hurrah!

  • Interesting. I'm on two Mastodon servers, one very tiny and one sort of medium. So every now and then I'll hop over to .social and run a search for my fave hashtags and follow anyone who isn't yet federated with my own server. With the keyword filtering, this could actually be a very useful tool for that process!

  • Nice, added my couple of accounts 👍

  • No idea! I just searched for some of the biggest instances and they're not on there either 🤷‍♀️

  • At the very least some kind of server rule asking people not to literally dump 100 hour long videos in a row, but to maybe instead bring their best ones over and take it as an opportunity to leave the trash videos behind!

Makertube admin just posted another update for anyone who's interested what sort of effect this is having and how much hosting such things costs https://mastodon.social/@MakerTube/111268033207325923

  • Honestly I don't think there is a reason, there aren't many features for viewers on there and it's just another account to deal with. You can subscribe to accounts / channels from Lemmy or Mastodon or presumably whatever other Fedi service you're already on, and leave comments / upvotes from there.

The search function on a given PT instance is only going to return results it's federated with so I think the only way to get a "global" search and find things across all the instances at once is https://search.joinpeertube.org
