  • Glad to hear other folks having positive experiences here too! Idk about you but every single time I've corrected someone for referring to me as "he" on Lemmy, they've actually apologised. Quite the change from Reddit!

  • Being welcoming to people in general goes without saying. But we're specifically in a thread about encouraging more women to join and making them feel safe to do so.

  • Woohoo! Get them over here, December is going to be SOCK MONTH it's very exciting haha ๐Ÿ˜„

  • I'm a woman, and make no attempt to hide that fact in my posts. That said, I also don't personally have much interest in talking about being a woman, so don't sub to any of those places you linked.

Over on Reddit I just sort of let people assume I was male a lot of the time, since it wasn't really relevant to what we were talking about. But from the start on Lemmy I've made sure to call out incorrect assumptions, downvote and give a talking to people stereotyping or being misogynistic, etc etc. And the more of us (of all genders) that make that same decision, the better things get.

I also mod !knitting@lemmy.world which as you might expect is largely although by no means entirely women. Any questionable comments over there are dealt with swiftly, I am absolutely not having it.

I don't necessarily see it as a "problem" that Lemmy is seemingly male-dominated (I say Lemmy because my Mastodon is very much female-and-NB-dominated). It's more just a fact of early adopters tending to the techy interests that skew male. But if someone does see it as a problem and wants it to change, there are basically two things to do:

    1. Make sure you're helping make Lemmy a welcoming place for non-males
    2. Invite your non-male friends

All that said, other women may disagree but I don't particularly feel like a minority on here and never really think about it until coming across something gross (which is a LOT less often than on Reddit, thankfully). There may be few enough women that I recognise their names often when they post, but let's be honest Lemmy is a small world and that goes for most regular posters in general.

(And it helps that I'm middle-aged so if any little boy thinks they can upset me with comments about my gender or appearance or whatever, lol, the self-confidence of age is a wonderful thing ๐Ÿ˜‰)

Edit: Just wanted to add, if you're not a man and you're reading this thinking "wow she's lucky, I've had such a bad experience here" then first, I'm sorry you've had that experience, people suck sometimes. But also, drop me a DM let's see if we've got any interests in common and I can maybe signpost you to some more friendly communities and people. Between my two accounts I spend WAY too much time on Lemmy!

  • We booked a holiday to Reykjavik and I was SO excited to go find my name, but then realised we'd booked for almost exactly one month before the planned unveiling. Guess we'll just have to go back one day!

Did get a cheesy photo of myself doing a thumbsup outside of CCP HQ. And you know, saw awe-inspiring natural wonders and stuff. So that counts for something I guess.

  • It seems to depend a lot on the topic tbh, for example cross stitch is more active on Lemmy whereas knitting is more active on Mastodon. Memes, Lemmy. Gamedev, Mastodon. etc etc. I end up cross-posting a lot from Mastodon to Lemmy just to cover all my bases ๐Ÿ˜„

Your post kind of dismisses hashtags but given that they're basically what all of Mastodon runs on, I'd very much recommend using them. Both to build your own follow list and feeds, as well as in your posts to reach other people.

And don't be afraid to ask for a boost if you have something to say that you think is relevant to a much wider audience.

  • It's definitely an issue with small, niche servers unfortunately. Had a friend's just go down unexpectedly this week with no warning to let the handful of people on there migrate, so they're starting over from scratch. My craft server shut down a couple weeks ago although we did get a month warning there so could go through the proper migration process.

I try and donate to all my Fedi servers just to make it worth the admin's while, because I prefer smaller servers in general but don't want them to suddenly disappear!

  • I use one Mastodon account for looking at, sharing and chatting about cool craft projects, and another account to meet other small-time gamedevs and cheer each other on. Also ended up meeting someone from the #Eurovision tag irl last year when we ended up randomly seated right next to each other in the arena, which was a bit mad.

I've never seen the point of social media either unless you've actually got something interesting to say or at the very least something in particular you want to see other people talk about. But what's interesting kind of depends on the person.

What is it you want to talk about? What is it you have to share? Jump into the hashtag feed for those things and make some friends.

  • Thanks! Swear I tried to find it, but there are apparently lots of things called Gemini out there ๐Ÿ˜…

  • Never heard of it and a search is just turning up crypto stuff, which is presumably not what you mean. Any chance of a link?

  • Yep that's how all these federated services work. Your instance can only show you stuff it already knows about, so someone needs to have been first to find and follow it.

  • I thought about this, but without hosting my own instance it could be kind of annoying to export and backup.

Also considered a dedicated Mastodon account somewhere with a decent character limit, but I'm not sure what form their content export takes and whether it would be usable as a backup, more research needed there.

    Thanks for the suggestion!

  • Do NOT look up any further information first. Just play. Enjoy!

  • Thanks! Checking it out now

  • Brilliant first link thank you, will take some time to go through that list for sure.

I'd heard of Plume but there's a notice on the project homepage saying they're no longer in active development and to consider other options instead. Understandable, but definitely a shame.

(also, yes absolutely, making sure I can export and transfer is a big priority for me too!)

  • No worries, appreciate the reply! I actually used to work as a WP developer so am fine setting that up if it ends up being the best option. But it's been a while, so I just have no idea if it is.

One thing I've turned up so far is that WriteFreely doesn't seem to have any kind of commenting, so that's a big downside for a blog.

Hoping these aren't the only two possibilities!
