  • The 1980s YA books Spacebread and Born of Flame are 100% set in this universe.

  • Any AI solution you find is probably going to be command line / python and is going to require some debugging of your python environment and dependencies to get it working. And that means yes, you will need to separate the audio and video tracks and then recombine them. For that kind of work, I'm only familiar with Linux tools. I've used a tool called Vidcutter that is buggy, but powerful and has a semi intuitive gui.

That said, the results from those AI tools can be a powerful game changer if you can figure them out.

  • Reading Egan is like getting a PHD in mathematics and a PHD in quantum physics, then going to Burning Man and doing 18 hits of acid.

Strongly agree about Reynolds and VInge.

  • I have people who depend on me.

My 14-year-old son has Long Covid with what they're calling reversible small airways disease. He's missed so much school over the last 3 years that we've had to transfer him to online school. He also has like three or four medical appointments a week he has to be driven to.

My wife has severe autism and EDS. She can barely do anything due to body pain and sensory overload.

Oh yeah, and all of their needs run 100% counter to one another and cause horrible conflict. Like "my wife uses cannabis to manage pain and sensory overload, it's one of the few things that can help her function like a normal person for a little while" and "due to his small airways disease, my son's pulmonologist has told us it's very important for him to never be in a house where someone is smoking or vaping." Like "due to the EDS my wife's body can't regulate its own temperature and she starts overheating if the temperature goes above 70ยฐ (like vomiting and passing out overheating)" and "due to complications from Post Acute COVID Syndrome, my son's body gets chilled easily, and he starts getting asthma attacks if he breathes cold air." Like "due to her autism, my wife's life needs to be a carefully regimented routine, that as much as possible goes the same way everyday, the same things happen at the same times, things need to be predictable and planned in advance, or she literally breaks down, can't function, has violent meltdowns and panic attacks" and "due to the online school, the medical appointments, combined with just being a teenager, my son's life is barely manageable chaos."

Oh yeah, and if I don't get out of bed, go to work and bring in money, both of these people are fucked!

  • One of mine is "Leave No Trace" backpacking in a National Park in my 20s when I was on a very tight budget. I felt bad at the time about not supporting the National Park Service, so I packed out a bunch of trash.

  • It is stupid and evil to reject cubic truth.

  • Reach out to the job sites directly and report these as fraudulent.

We're already doing that, but it's like playing Whack-A-Mole and when we ask which job sites the calls are coming from, half the time the person calling doesn't know or won't tell us.

Then, since it sounds like you are her lawyer.

I'm her IT guy. She's in communication with her lawyers about exactly that, because it's exactly what I advised her to do. I actually have a call with them about that tomorrow, I gather they're not very familiar with cyber harassment laws.

If the perpetrator knows how to install Tor Browser, the subpoenas are likely to be a lot of trouble and expense for a lot of useless data.

  • For some reason "The following statement is true." "The previous statement is false." has always tried to send my brain into an infinite loop.

  • Oh shit. I haven't thought about this guy in years.

I guess I'll be singing What Does The Fox say for the next few weeks.

  • It's gotta be something about being young and gay in San Francisco.
