  • I don't think that's actually true. I detest FPTP but Westminster systems all around have all sorts of smaller parties that work because they have concentrated power bases. The NDP, the Bloc, etc have been electing MPs for decades. If what you're saying is true, they would have been disappeared by now.

  • Please please please people don't parrot brain-dead American takes that not voting for Carney is voting for PP. We are running a parliamentary election in a Westminster system. There is no single election, there are 338 elections. We don't elect a prime minister, we elect a parliament.

    Think, and vote strategically.

While it is absolutely true that the blackmail holds in ridings where it's a competitive Conservative-Liberal race, it is a shit take in ridings where eg the race is between Conservatives and NDP (where Liberals would be the spoiler) or where the race is between the Liberals and the NDP, or the Bloc or the Greens (a Liberal minority dependent on the NDP/BQ/GP is actually a possible outcome that keeps PP out power and can moderate Carney's neoliberal tendencies).

So, basically if the conservatives have a chance to win your riding, vote whoever has the highest chance to keep them out. Otherwise, vote your conscience.

  • I'm not interested at being respectful towards Trump.

  • Israeli authorities routinely kidnap Palestinian civilians and convict them through kangaroo military courts and disappear them in prisons run by a "Jewish Power" extremist.

This isn't a "two assholes" situation. One party in the conflict has the other under brutal occupation and apartheid, and is in the process of ethnically cleansing and genociding it. Calling it a "two assholes" situation is ignoring that dynamic. Sort of like saying the Apartheid regime in South Africa and the ANC are somehow on equal moral footing. Bull Shit.

Jews lived in the area for millennia. So did non-jews (like, read the Torah, bro). Christians and Muslims have lived there since Christianity and Islam became religions respectively. Why should Jews get exclusive national determination in that bit of land? Who has claim? No one has claim. All have claim.

  • Legault keeps "solving" problems that don't exist to try to appear more nationalistic than the PQ.

They are just pushing moral panic against Muslims to appear like they are doing something to protect QC culture. At the same the same time they have defunded french language classes. And they keep not saying anything about how the feds are consistently discriminating against African francophone potential immigrants.

There is no culture war with Muslims in actual Quebec society beyond the shit the CAQ is stirring to stay in the news. There are no armies of niqab wearing fanatics trying to take over our cities. But it costs the government nothing to push this crap. This is all shadowboxing for appearances.

  • US officials claim move was to curb drug trafficking.

Ah, the famous Quebec-Vermont drug corridor.

These guys are just a couple of steps away from "it has electrolytes, it's what the plants crave".

At this point I feel bad for Vermonters.

  • Nah, it's not the same thing. Donald is talking about diplo-annexing us. Or in less gamy terms, he's talking about a hostile takeover.

  • Tariffs are not the way to address these concerns, regulation is.

  • Guys guys guys, let's be good friends with the EU, let's even adopt some of their best policies, but honestly, they also have some baggage we don't need.

  • Are you seriously trying to I pull a "it's the Jews' fault" right now?

  • The problem with you yanks is that you're too far up your own asses. How predictable is it that the whole discussion under this post is about your last election. Nobody cares any more. Your country is lead by a fascist doing fascist things to you and abroad. And all you do is bicker about what happened half a year ago. Your country is wading in the waters of Rubicon, what are you going to do NOW about it?

  • Thoughts and prayers to all those affected.

  • Oh you haven't seen nasty yet, Donald.

  • I don't know about indistinguishable. California has some super weird libertarian leanings too.

  • I honestly don't understand the downvotes. Canada is a settler colonial state, does anyone dispute that here? The indigenous people were coerced into "signing treaties" without having the legal and cultural framework, and without having the status and power to be fully free parties into a free agreement. And regardless, this is one of the things we are actually doing better(*) than the yanks: we have had a Truth and Reconciliation Commission, and we are learning to cope with our past. Every person who becomes Canadian swears to "faithfully observe the laws of Canada including the Constitution which recognizes and affirms the aboriginal and treaty rights of First Nations, Inuit and MĂŠtis peoples".

The US is a country that had a noble foundation and a shitty follow through. Canada is the opposite: a shitty foundation, a noble follow through. We are precisely the one of the two that does not pretend we came from the pure ideal of some idealized founding daddies, we specifically understand that we must always improve. We're a forward facing people. That's why I'm proud to be Canadian.

(*) "better", not well. We actually have a very long way to go, and we still are very bad at treating indigenous people. The downvotes actually attest to that.

  • Well now I'm intrigued and all I'm finding is Rembrandt.
