  • One fucking journalist should have the spine to respond to the "naaasty question" rants this idiot keeps going off on. It's called scrutiny. If you don't want nasty questions, go home.

  • You're being silly with your constant assertion of how many hard decisions you have to make. I'm a homeowner too. Big boy, I pay four different types of taxes and all that. I own a car too. But I also own an electric cargo bike. I also take transit and use my non electric bike and my feet. Most of my groceries come home on foot or by (gasp!) delivery. The real world is not a world where you need to be driving fucking everywhere. In fact, it's a world where you should only be driving if there is really no better alternative -- and you should be voting in local governments that create such alternatives for more and more areas of our lives. Because the responsible adult grown up big boy thing to do is to do as a citizen everything you can to reduce car dependency to as close to zero as we can as a society.

  • A culture that obsoletes electronics every couple of years and enshittifies services every couple of other years cannot be seriously talking about MMIs/BCIs.

  • You have to earn the second chance, yanks. And given the size of the betrayal, you got to work hard, very hard, to earn it.

  • This is a light version of the Maralago face, the self mutilation with plastic surgery, like Noem, or Gaetz. The self ridicule that they entail is the point. This is telling the Leader "I'm irredeemably yours".

  • Why are things like housing coops and other kinds of off-market housing (eg council housing) not a solution to affordable housing? Georgism to me sounds like too many hoops jumped to protect private ownership, when social/municipal/public ownership is a more straightforward solution.

And on the other end, Canada is big. There is still a lot of space to go off into the boonies and construct new transit oriented towns.

  • I don't know much about georgism, only that people who advocate for it online tend to present it as a silver bullet for too many things and that makes me suspicious that it's snake oil. Like I don't know the band, but the fans are kinda sketchy.

  • So like, what's your poison, pardner, Poilievre or Bernier?

  • Don't ask me, a random guy on the internet. Ask your elected representatives, your intellectuals, your think tanks. Your civil society, man, not some random Canadian online.

  • So make "tax the rich" a culture war thing. Left populism is a winning strategy too.

  • Hey, yanks, until your centre right party (the Democrats) is willing to go all in and run candidates at all levels of government on the slogan of "The Largest Downward Transfer of Wealth in American History", your far right party (the Republicans) will keep repeating this. But if it makes you feel better, go back to blaming Muslims in Michigan or whatever.

  • I am old enough to remember G7/G8/G20 being huge opportunities for massive protests.

  • So they want to disincentive direct foreign investment now? Can someone explain to me under what set of assumptions this makes economic sense?

  • Good point. The province should tax oil and gas companies to fund the construction of good public transit.

  • It's why we need anti-car advocacy at all levels of government. Otherwise only the grumps get a say.

  • If you look at our discussion you might notice that at no point have I singled out Israel as the only possible perpetrator. We are literally discussing this in the thread below an article about the American government making genocidal plans. Between Trumpist USA and the far right current Israeli government, an escalation is not inconceivable. It is true however that thankfully there are multiple actors, from the Europeans to the Egyptians and Jordanians for example, who would not easily allow something like this to happen. But then again, if the world order is blown up in WW3, anything is possible and these kinds of plans would become much less unworkable... Which is why calling them out and not letting them be normalized now is very important.
