  • I’d find a good YouTube Channel like Makers Muse or Make With Layers for some beginner tips and tricks, that really helped me when I was starting out to get into the lingo.

As for software suggestions. Follow the recommendations from the manufacturer for the printer for software. Using Printables or Thingiverse for models to start with. At least to get started.

Then understand what printer you have. There is a world of difference between an Flashforge Adventure, Ender 3, and Prusa Mini.

After printing some fun models like a Benchy, try making your own stuff you’ll have a good feel for what’s a good print once you’ve printed other models, and have a few failures.

My software recommendations are as follows:

Modelling software for the teen: TinkerCAD, it’s free, it’s simple, and there are hundreds of tutorials going over how to use it. The software feels limiting for the experienced, but for a newbie it’s not bad

Next steps: Google Sketchup is another free software, still limited but has a lot of resources and is a good intro into cad.

For you: Fusion360, I think it’s still free, but with heavy restrictions. But from the last I checked it still has all the tools you need to get started. Plus it’s well documented with dozens of tutorials and guides.

My Software: I use to use Fusion, but I moved to FreeCAD. Made with layers goes over why this isn’t the best software and it’s many many issues. But for me I personally love using it with the sheer precision and control I can get with my designs. It’s not for beginners and the documentation is poor, with virtually no tutorials. I’ve done a small write up for how to get started before so check my comments if you are interested.

Otherwise Cura or PrusaSlicer is to get your models to print.

  • On an iPad connected to a display it works great for multitasking with iPad OS’s reduced input. Stage manager feels like a natural transition from Apples touch screen gui to a desktop like gui.

But if I am honest I’d just prefer an outright window manager like we get in most other desktop os’s

  • Not any that I found useful sadly :D, FreeCAD is mostly used by Engineers, so finding a coherent easy to understand tutorial isn't easy. I got the gyst with trial and error and watching people use FreeCAD.

3 Lessions which makes FreeCAD flow make sense.

    1. In Part Design a Sketch Lives within a Body, so you create Body then Sketch

    1. The Sketches white lines needs to be complete, with no gaps. If you need to add structure (like adding a circle to a box), you can do so with construction geometry (blue lines)

    1. When a line turns green (or construction turns light blue, it's constrained. Meaning it won't move.

For me this was what allowed me to understand how to use FreeCAD well enough to replace Fusion. Everything from what I've used thus far, is based on this hierarchy and order of operation.

  • Not sure about sculpting, but in terms of sketching I find it good but flawed.

Getting to grips with sketching and how you need to complete shapes, and using support lines is a learning curve.

However I find it quite rewarding and worth the time to learn.

  • Happy to see the credits gags are still here.

Good to see Yahtzee going, and the content is still on point. The graphics will take time getting use to but that's a me problem.

  • Probably Pokemon Emerald, or Diamond.

These were the last exploration Pokemon games and I would love to be immersed in their worlds again discovering all their secrets for the first time.

From uncovering the braille in the under water ruins, to the changing water levels of seafoam cave.

To finding the shop keepers of the underground mines and the last safari zone of the great marsh.

Now-a-days replaying them is still fun, but not as exciting as they were before, since I remembered where everything is.

  • I have a Gigabyte Clevo thingy, so take what I say with a grain of salt. My laptop has a i5 11 gen intel cup, and it doesn’t have the cooling for my cpu. I don’t know if this is a bug in Linux, or a fault in the pc (probably both). So when I play games it spikes to 80-90C then throttles.

So what I did was look into software that lets me control the CPU frequency, which led me to Slimbook Battery. This software is amazing and lets me tune the power usage of my cpu to manage the thermals.

I believe Open Build has a package of Slimbook Battery for Opensuse Tumbleweed, but I’ve had no luck running it. On my Manjaro install it works excellently.

  • I think it depends on how you want to make your models. TinkerCAD looks to be more like making models with Clay, drag, drop pre-made shapes to make your models. If you are looking for more of that then perhaps you are looking for Blender or Maya. Both of these softwares can make the models that are 3D Printable.

Most of the advise you will get from those who 3D Print are machines, who want their designs to be mm perfect. Exact lengths and exact shapes dictated by measurements. Which is something that most CAD software like you've listed do very well.

For beginners who want to learn this kind of CAD, from my experience Google Sketchup and Fusion 360 are great starting points due to the treasure trove of online resources. But from my personal usage, FreeCAD fits my design style perfectly, allowing me to make everything I could in Fusion with a lot more precision.

TL:DR You might be looking for software like Blender or Maya, vs CAD software like Fusion or Google Sketchup. All these software will do what you are looking for, but I think it depends on how you want to make models.

  • I didn't try those yet. I presume it wouldn't be helpful since I need noise isolation and blocking. Not sure if they do that

  • Aaaaaand it's over

  • I have noise cancelling Sony earbuds for a while now. At this point I've just gotten use to how people talk, and guessing at what they said and I missed.

  • Aaaaaand it's over

  • Pretty much. The inability to filter voices from other noises. Not fun when you are on a bus and the engine is the only thing you can make out

  • The new iphones now have USB c so it's not as bad as it use to be, since USB c dongles can be cross device compatible. But yeah it suuucks.

  • iPhone, iPad, and most Samsungs don't have a 3.5mm headphone jack.

  • Agreed, though sadly this doesn't apply to me. Hearing issues doesn't always mean hearing loss. I have Auditory Processing Disorder or Auditory Dyslexia means my hearing is good, but I don't always understand what people are saying.

Speaker phone makes it easier for me to understand what the other person is saying. But again its a dick move to use it in public.

  • Yup, texting is my go to for most of the time. However I want to catch up, I usually arrange a call.

  • Aaaaaand it's over

  • Wow I almost feel singled out by this. But I presume that this is supposed to be in public. Which by every account is a dick move.

However I do this in private, I.e. in my car or at home. And the reason I do it is because I can't hear a call without using the speaker phone. Hearing issues aren't fun.

However the easier solution is headphones, but calls over Bluetooth can make things worse, from battery life to sound quality.

Wired headphones are the preferable solution to this but we all know what happened to those.

TL:DR I do this because of my hearing issues. In public this is a dick move, but headphones aren't the solution they use to be.

  • Neo Launcher is the closest to Nova I used, but its feel like a work in progress

  • It's the "share button". Apparently somewhere in there lets you post to a linked twitter account.

  • I played a lot of Titanfall 1 back when it was new, my first school Gaming PC was designed to run Titanfall at max settings.

  • Not the person you asked, but honestly it's the most useless button on the controller. I hit it by accident, and want the menu to go away quicker than it took to load in.
