  • The cost of the petroleum industry's greed is probably more human lives than we can count. That includes millions of unaccounted deaths caused by climate change. The oil barons may be the worst criminals in human history.

  • Sort of a non-solution for the wider problem isn’t it?

Honestly, I was wondering what people here are talking about. uBO is so effective that you don't notice either its presence or the ads it blocks. uBO might be a real effective solution for the problems you mention - until enough people use and start hurting Google's revenue. Even if it does, uBO is a necessary defense since Google ads are obnoxious and potentially harmful.

  • The same technique is being studied for assisted suicides where the terminal patient gets to administer or even withdraw it themselves. That is likely to have a better ethical standing since it's about dying with dignity if they can't live with dignity. It's likely to confirm if nitrogen asphyxiation is as painless as they claim.

That aside, some meds say that hypoxia is painless as long as carbon dioxide content in the blood remains low. Even carbon monoxide poisoning victims seem to die in sleep. That sounds way better than any of the other methods of execution. Not that I support the death penalty.

  • The main issue here is that it's the evolution we're talking about. Even if China is exaggerating, it's not a stretch to think that the virus could become infectious or even transmissible among humans. And remember that covid19 has an asymptomatic high transmission phase. Again, it's not a stretch to think that a lower fatality rate or a longer incubation period could lead to a high transmission rate. To put it simply, it's not favorable for even the most incompetent people to play with bioweapons - the resilience of evolutionary biology more than makes up for it.

  • The veto power is the truly horrendous idea that's the nail in the coffin for the UN. It's based on neither the representation of population, nor on justice. Rather, it's based on military might and the ability to bully the other nations. Even neglecting the fact that the world order is subject to change and challenges, it's hardly surprising that any nation takes the UN seriously with such a petulant assertion of authority. Whoever came up with that idea isn't a visionary of world peace - but rather a moron drunk on the kool-aid of ensuring world peace through the military might of a few over the self respect of the rest.

  • I keep telling everyone that they're ruining the internet by using and supporting chrome instead of Firefox. I keep telling them that Firefox user experience is at par with or better than Chrome's. But then I realize that I don't use FB, Google (besides occasional searches) or any of the similar suspects. Bad experience on Firefox seems to be uniquely tied to these bad actors, perhaps because it isn't as easy to track users on it (with the help of plugins like uBO). People really need to de-addict themselves from these spyware services and software. Or we are all doomed.

  • Wow! I'm surprised that everyone is so surprised. Windows resource requirements - especially the RAM - have always grown exponentially between major versions. Remember that we started with some 16MB RAM. They have consistently demanded hardware that completely obsoletes the hardware in the market that can run the previous generation of Windows.

Windows is the best example of a software that always manages to completely nullify or even negate the Moore's law.

  • That's a bit hyperbolic. You're talking as if it's still early 2000s. Many Linux distributions have very good user experience for beginners and better out-of-the-box device driver support than even Windows.

I choose one of those niche distributions since I have advanced requirements. But I have observed a steady decline in hardware-related issues over the years. In fact, Linus Torvalds confirms this in an interview.

Linux distributions are a viable alternative to Windows these days. But what keeps people away from it is misinformation and FUD like these.

  • And they're investing in the customers in what sense? It's the customers who make the investment in their products and get their dignity challenged in return.

I have a need for a printer and HP is solidly in the don't-touch list. Companies that treat their customers so indignantly as HP should simply be raided and closed for good. Or perhaps, HP should realize that morons like this scumbag are a bad investment as a CEO.

  • I'm not a very religious person. But if Jesus (the human being) could see what his followers have become, he would be disgusted. I don't know how they can read the bible and say that Trump is the sort of person it heralded. There is a major cognitive dissonance in the miswired brains of these 'evangelicals'.

  • I don't think they have any religious basis for this.

The same applies to Russia. You can say something similar about ultra conservative Catholics, since the Pope has called for tolerance. Yet, they would rather denounce the Pope than tolerate LGBTQ+.

The key idea is that bigotry is not driven by religious affiliation, but rather by authoritarian attitudes. That's what's common between China, Russia and the ultra conservatives in the US. Tolerance of LGBTQ indicates freedom and liberalism in some sense. And both are challenges to the stakeholders of authoritarianism. They want a world where people live within the framework they dictate - and thus the bigotry.

  • His takeover convinced many to leave. Then he prompted advertisers to leave by abusing them on video. And now he's throwing out one side from the few left. I'm amazed at the 3 early moves of his 40B$ 5D chess game. Any moment now, this business genius will pull out his magic move out of his hat!

  • Enough with the 'it's the worst and it will get even worse' stories. Start publishing the names and actions of those who benefitted from these catastrophies. Start publishing their plans to ride out the crises when the rest of us struggle in a disaster they made. Start publishing the actions they took to sabotage the world's search for energy independence and sustainability. Start publishing how much money they made/stole with this. Start publishing the number of lives lost per person who benefitted from this.

I don't understand the f***ing pacifist strategy against a bunch of greedy sniveling mass murderers.

  • Are you kidding me? Governments are trying to expand surveillance on us plebs by expanding their own coverage and forcing access to private ones. We wouldn't have such cameras if they cared about our privacy or safety.

PS: This case should be considered as a slap in the face for those "I don't need privacy because I have nothing to hide" people

  • Best not to lump us all in the same boat.

Please don't take it personally. That wasn't meant to be a generalization. Honestly, I understand exactly what you mean - something extremely similar is going on around here. But realistically, the lack of either society to drop their egos and be honest about their futures is going to cause an unmitigated disaster, to put it mildly.
