  • Smaller country, less money involved... but here's hoping.

Edit: I'm not sure why I'm being downvoted. Comparing the speed of the British election cycle to that of the US is mismatched. Yes, US elections are ridiculous and bloated, but that's still the reality of them. Regardless, we'll have to do things faster based on circumstances.

  • You're right, I was unclear about that, but it doesn't really matter to my point. An isolated group of 15-25 kids and a teacher is the typical organization of a school, and this isolation has it's benefits but can lead to problems.

  • I think another problem in schools is that classrooms are so isolated, which means that teachers are isolated from each other, too. The little world of a classroom can have a great culture and atmosphere, but it can also be pretty fucked up in a multitude of ways when one adult is overseeing 15-25 kids every day for a year. Honestly, it even gets kind of lonely as a teacher when you have so little meaningful time spent with peers.

A good principal steps into each classroom regularly, but more co-teaching and interdisciplinary studies would both be better for students as well as an improvement to teacher culture.

  • I've actually heard several times over the last few years that Barcelona is unfriendly towards tourists, and then there's the recent news that they will ban short-term rentals in 2028 and that multiple groups were involved in the water gun stunt... So no, it's not just the water guns, but it takes a lot for news from Spain to reach me in the States. The water guns were actually a moderately effective means of telling me that tourism is an issue in the city, and that people are angry about it.

I can't say that my individual thoughts and actions are common, but I'm not unique in this world either. Many cities are expressing frustration at the results of tourism, and through various means locals are making themselves known. I do think it does some amount of good for the protestors to organize via actions, both for the strength of the local movement, as well as in creating awareness of issues. I'm not sure what else they're looking for past the ban, though I'm sure they have as many existential crises through capitalism as the rest of the world. Other desires and critiques haven't made it across the Atlantic to me yet.

  • Eh, I'd love to visit Barcelona, but I won't until they figure out how to make tourism work without causing the city to be unlivable for locals.

I wish I knew how to be a better tourist, too. I've seen similar feedback from other cities, including my own. Tourism and prioritizing tourism isn't good for locals in many ways.

  • "Making fun" isn't quite right, but they were definitely being sarcastic. I think people throughout this thread are encouraging you to be less self-absorbed so that you can 1. Enjoy things around you without feeling like you're being judged for it, and 2. Develop empathy for those you interact with.

I know it seems trite, but it's important to realize that social interactions are way more fun if you pay attention to other people and are curious about them.
