I hadn't even thought about it until you brought it up. Kind of disappointed in people jumping on this like flies on shit but like... it's 2025, so bigger things to be upset about.
In any case, apples and oranges. And PSA, if you need a Switch 2, grab em on the rebound. There'll be used ones, likely hackable in 6 months and none of that goes to Nintendo. Don't forget what their legal department has done in the past few years.
I know this is all about awkwardness but what if you get the Lemmy Be Wholesome ending where they made a new friend who also likes the niche film you do?
Piracy and emulation is inevitable, although we'll see if it's months or years. I'm boycotting Nintendo over their legal practices, but that doesn't mean I don't want to play their games. It'll be extra juicy to be able to emulate it eventually, although buying used is technically an option too.
I've noticed a pattern of deception lately. This comment came after a comment saying he'd never call for such a thing so that edits can focus on that part and edit out the tar and feather. They do that with Trump all the time, too, like with the Epstein files comment. You'll get the full comment if you look for it, but you know damn well the GoP propaganda is going to select which part of the contradicting message to show.
I mentioned elsewhere but it's not atypical to run curfews when there's unrest after hours. In most situations it's more akin to an advisory warning (especially with so many exemptions). Given reports of looting, that's typical policy and 25 arrests in a city of more than 10,000,000 is not 'mass'.
Given how much the Mayor is getting stepped on by the feds, try not conflate this with them being on the same side as the fascists who made this a mess to begin with.
Less than the majority is depressing, but don't forget how the media is covering this. MAGA eats this shit up, obviously, but even your standard semi-informed people are getting "riots on the street of LA" bullshit on their local news outlets.
I'm actually a little surprised it's "almost half" in disapproval, given how badly this is covered. I wonder if TikTok and Bluesky are helping, the latter being obvious but the former being surprisingly good at showing what's actually happening on the ground-- at least a lot better than Meta and X options.
Honestly on a weekday the protests aren't particularly big as far as I can tell. There might be several, but they're not over a hundred big. It's kind of silly seeing the military response to such a small crowd, though.
It helps when they say they'll get rid of their billions after death, like Gates recently said. I don't particularly trust them to actually do that, although his and Buffetts actions do suggest they don't just want to hoard wealth like an dragon. They like influence too much to prematurely give up that wealth, though.
There's probably some, but keep in mind that your instance has to be federated with them and lemmy.world generally defederates a lot of the more extreme instances (plus a few benign but potentially illegal instances, since the admins don't want legal trouble.)
That said, Lemmy historically is rather extreme "left" (if you can call it that lol) so much so that the .ml of lemmy.ml stands for Marxist-Leninst. That starting point kinda makes the rest of us the conservatives of the community.
If you want to feel challenged, look into who we defederate from. Hexbear, lemmygrad, beehaw, etc. I'm sure those rabbit holes will be new to you, although heaven help you lol
There's something primal about throwing feces at aggressors. I like it.
