  • I want 4k 144Hz 🤠

  • "Stargate" is already taken for another science fiction. You'll have to pick another name.

  • That's a damn shame.

  • Playing the game used to be the requirement to get content out of it, and no account needed.

  • CUDA being taken down a peg is the best part for me. Fuck proprietary APIs.

    I disagree, Mr Website.

  • Looks like switching from VISA to something else would be a pain in the ass.

  • I heard Windows was adding a "snapshot" and guessed that's what they were doing, but uhh.. are there really "AI Screens" hardware doing this too?

  • The distance between 'seeking perfection' and 'lowering personal standards' can be far. Let's make sure one isn't leaving an abusive relationship for another one.

  • I came from a ~10 year old phone so FF5 was a big upgrade. Battery lasts the work day (may go from 80% to ~50% or ~30% mostly playing bluetooth audio for like 4 hours on and off). Fairphone uses some industrial chip instead of a mobile one - so it uses more power but they say it can get much longer updates than other phones. I usually have the screen set to 60Hz to save power, but a cheeky 120Hz session feels great. One bug is I can't charge it in power save mode.

I got standard Android but replaced the proprietary store/apps (updates still requires Google Pain Store). I planned to try out an Android fork later but that's was not as easy as I had naively thought. [Requires an SDK binary that come with non-free license and 3rd party guides to build it myself were rather dead].

I not aware it could run non-android OS - do you have exp installing a Linux phone OS? How did you find that? I'll have to look into FF5 compatibility.

  • Have you considered Fairphone 5? Might not compare to modern phones but it's very repairable.

  • Why look to a (oversized) stick to deal with behavior by some people that may be brought on by lack of responsibility? Consider carrots: rewards for good behavior.

The internet is probably not worth losing privacy, which protects your freedom, anyway.

  • Wikipedia says "direct messages are offered though a central service". If that's was/still is correct then you're correct, it's centralized.

Nuance is the friend of truth - pedantic.

  • Immich was alright once I had manually set every account to be "Partners" with every other account. I plan to set it up again once I get hardware for the server so I can easily backup images/video from my phone (while at home anyway).

  • Never used Instagram. Could selfhosting Pixelfed be useful for sharing pictures between family members?

  • Learning is difficult but I have to believe it is still part of the solution.

  • It's not always obvious or easy to make what non-techies will find easy. Changes could unintentionally make the experience worse for long-time users.

I know people don't want to hear it but can we expect non-techies to meet techies half way by leveling their tech skill tree a bit?

  • Techy people are a lot more likely to jump through hoops because that knowledge/experience makes it easier for them, they understand it's worthwhile or because it's fun. If software can be made easier for non-techy people and there's no downsides then of course that aught to be done.
