  • I see what you mean. By that definition of engineer then I would agree.

We could perhaps engineer androids that mimic us so well that to damage them would feel to us like hurting a human. I would feel compelled to take the risk of caring for an unfeeling simulation just in case they were actually able to suffer or flourish.

  • I thought that's what was ment by privacy of consciousness and agree that's how it is.

However, being unable to inspect if something has a consciousness doesn't mean we can't create a being which does. We would be unaware if we actually succeeded, or if it even happened unintentionally with some other goal in mind.

  • Why does privacy of consciousness mean one can't engineer consciousness by mimicking states of the organ that probably has something to do with it?

    What does phenomenal transparency mean?

  • In the good/bad old days a web page was just text and images but now a browser is a platform for running software. Each website can do useful computing for the user but the software author is in control and always tempted to make it run for them at the expense of the user.

Crazy idea, maybe we shouldn't use web browsers.

  • Did it download the original file or are there download options transcoded on the server?

  • Although Plex is running on your server it isn't there to do what you want.. unless Plex's real owner permits it.

    That's how proprietary software works.

  • As long as good actors can still do good work in a fork of Linux then hopefully it's resistant to corporate vultures.

  • Always happy to see this quirky game get an update. I wonder how they determine what to add next.

  • Not got around to trying it out properly yet. Waiting on new AMD GPUs, hoping for a low-end encoder or I may get access to a RX 480.

What does Jellyfin use .NET for?

  • I can understand separating a new paid-only feature, especially if you don't much need that part. The new features are reportedly accessible from the GUI of Notepad so I wouldn't blame anyone else who thought "NOTEPAD" asked them to sign up and pay a subscription to use "NOTEPAD" features.

I used to rage when reading bad changes to Windows, even after I'd stopped using it. Now I just feel bad that my friends are still in that a bad relationship with their computer.

  • I had not considered that an uninterruptible power supply would be consuming power after charging. I suppose no electronics are 100% efficient at what they do.

I've been playing with a Proxmox server on an ITX system for local services and rare game hosting for friends. I'd love something low power I could have on all the time.

  • In fairness neither have I - though I suspect it's not as insignificant as others have claimed.

  • Even if you did want apps the majority only offer it from 1 of the 2 popular repositories (" stores "). It's a shame they do not have a way to track that lost sale/interaction.

  • An online menu requires power to be used (on people's phones and the server). Is that really a minor contribution in comparison to printing paper and maybe laminating it?

    • Humans write code
    • Humans make mistakes

    ∴ Humans write bad code

  • I've not seen those (may not be in my country). What do the concrete walls stop, explosions?

  • Doesn't appear so but there is that potential in a future update as they're in control of what the software actually does. If data is indeed stored in plain text files then hopefully an alternative software could be made to display that data.

  • Batteries and liquid fuel are both hazardous in terms of catching fire, do you mean something else?
