While I hate ads as much as the next person, I'm having trouble getting outraged by ads in an app store. "Recommendations" are kinda par for that course. Sure, it would be nice if those "recommendations" actually reflected stuff I was interested in and not just who paid Microsoft the most for ad placement. But, I also aggressively turn off telemetry (and actually don't use Windows at home). So, it's not like I expect useful recommendations anyway.

At the time I stood my server up, I was supporting RHEL at work and support for docker seemed a bit spotty. IIRC, it took both setting up the docker yum repo directly, along with the EPEL repo. And every once in a while, you could end up in dependency hell from something which was at different versions between EPEL and the official repos. Ubuntu, on the other hand, had better docker support in the official repos and docker seemed more targeted at .deb distributions. So, I made the choice to go Ubuntu.

I suspect this is long since all sorted. But, I see no compelling reason to change distributions now. The base OS is solid and almost everything the server does is containerized anyway. If I were to rebuild it, I would probably use something more targeted at containerization/virtualization, like Proxmox.

I had dabbled with Linux before, both at home and work. Stood up a server running Ubuntu LTS at home for serving my personal website and Nextcloud. But, gaming kept my main machine on Win10. Then I got a Steam Deck and it opened my eyes to how well games "just worked' on Linux. I installed Arch on a USB drive and booted off that for a month or so and again, games "just worked". I finally formatted my main drive and migrated my Arch install to it about a week ago.

I'm so glad that I won't be running Windows Privacy Invasion Goes to 11.

While folks like Schiff have some pull in the DNC, it's the delegates at the convention which choose the nominee. Party leaders have spent years ensuring that pledged delegates stay pledged delegates on the first round of voting. And it's Biden's team who chose those delegates. So, as long as Biden says he's staying, he's got this locked up.

If Biden refuses to step down, there isn't a lot for the DNC to do. Biden has the nomination locked up with pledged delegates. And I seriously doubt we are going to see a mass defection at the convention. So, short of him waking up dead one of these mornings (always a possibility for an 81 year old man), we're riding the Biden ship all the way down.

Who knows, maybe Trump will do us all a favor and have a massive coronary in the next few months. Goodness knows his eating habits aren't the best. But, my money is on the Biden-Trump rematch no one wanted.

Probably running half the US Government's systems.
The US Navy famously paid Microsoft to keep supporting Windows XP well after it's End of Life. There's probably some highly critical mainframe running in a basement somewhere, with no backups, spare parts cobbled together from failing systems and some gray beard wizard keeping it all spinning.

The actual first sentence of the article:

Emphasis added. This isn't the DoD saying "we need to use Huawei hardware", it's the DoD saying "a fuck-ton of companies we do business with use Huawei hardware." And that's because Huawei hardware is cheap and businesses like cheap. While I do think the DoD has some leverage in contracts to say, "welcome to the Defense Industrial Base (DIB), you cannot use anything manufactured by Huawei in infrastructure which is within scope". If the text of the law says that the DoD can't do business with companies who use Huawei hardware at all, then that's going to be very limiting.

That's funny, I have the exact same toy. It was a Father's day gift years ago. It's now an expensive display piece, as the battery no longer seems to hold a charge. And, as best I can tell, the battery is well sealed inside, making replacement impossible. Yet another thing I hate about our disposable culture.

If something requires an "app" and a connection to "the cloud" for basic functionality, don't buy it. This sort of abandonment by the manufacturer will always happen. Maybe it will last longer. Maybe it will be next week. But once the company has your money, the last thing they want to do is to spend any of that money providing you with support.

He was also constrained by some of the history of the game. There have always been spells in D&D which are better or worse. It's become a bit of a joke that the first spell taken by any wizard is Magic Missile. Why? Because it's been one of the most useful 1st level spells for wizards since early D&D. So, into the spell book it goes, and it was very often the one spell a first level wizard memorized.

I'm just glad that the designers are willing to take a critical look at their own work and say, "you know what, this sucks, let's fix it".

Showing "no change" would be a great result, if Biden were already ahead in the polls. But, he's not. Right now, Democrats seem to be stuck in a Sunk Cost Fallacy. Sure the other option is unknown and scary. But, when the known situation is "you're fucked", the "unknown and scary" starts to look less scary.

Also never been a fan of Biden (but voted for him, and will again, if I have to). You're falling into a Sunk Cost Fallacy. Yes, anyone chosen to replace Biden would be a gamble. But, Biden is a losing horse. The right time to replace him was last year. But, just because we missed that opportunity doesn't mean we should throw good time after bad. He should be replaced before things get so late it literally cannot be done.

This wasn't some otherwise strong candidate, who just had a bad day. Biden is already struggling in polling. While the economy hasn't been fantastic, it's good enough that he should be crushing Trump. Even in 2016, Clinton was polling ahead of Trump and still managed to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory. Biden isn't winning. He's maybe tied and maybe losing in current polling. Trump had already proven that he can be convicted in court and not lose support. There's just not much left to hurt Trump. And Biden doesn't seem to have anything left to gain support. Things are not going to get better for Biden.

Biden is losing this race. It's time to follow the rats off the ship, before we're trying to escape a ship on the bottom of the ocean.

My apologies, I was not familiar with the difference. I'm going to have to test this when I am back at my system. Looking at the docs, it does seem to be experimental in Linux. But it seems odd that it would turn off automagically.

That's interesting. I've not had that sort of issue. On my phone (Android), my son's laptop (Windows) and my desktop (Arch Linux) the NextCloud clients all sync perfectly and run at start up. Granted, knowing that the Linux landscape is fractured, I wouldn't be overly surprised if the client had issues on some flavors of Linux.

If you are willing to self-host, I've found Nextcloud integrates well in Linux. I had been using it before I made the switch and it worked out just fine afterwards. I originally set it up to have a cloud-sync option for my phone, which didn't mean passing everything through Google first. But, it also proved to be a handy way to sync files on my desktop as well.
It just shows up as another folder on my system and Libre Office is happy to work on files from there (with some permissions fiddling due to flatpak).

Every new "feature" I hear about in Windows Privacy Invasion Goes to 11, the happier I am that I switched to Linux. It's been mostly smooth and games have just worked. Though I know that much of that is because of Proton.

What, no "convenience fee"?

Maybe, though if you think about it, the idea is basically:
Hey, we borrowed all this money to buy up lots of companies. But rather than pay it back ourselves, we are going to put all of that debt on this one company we also bought (probably with some of that debt), because thay actually make money.

It's a shell game to allow Embracer to walk away with all the profits and never have to pay their investors back. If Asmodee manages to pay off the debt, that's nice for them. Other than the fact that they will be hamstrung by servicing that debt, rather than re-investing in the company. If Asmodee folds and gets auctioned off in Chapter 7, that ends up having no material effect on the leadership of Embracer who made the decision to take on all that debt. Either way, Embracer is jettisoning all responsibility for the choices the management of Embrace made.

This sort of leveraged debt buyout, loot the company, then jettison the debt tactic has been used over and over to destroy otherwise profitable companies in the name of short term profit for vulture capitalists.
