  • And personal data goes really far. Even an IP-address is personal data. An e-mail address is personal data.

Thankfully, Lemmy instances do not transport this kind of information about their users to other instances!

  • I was on the same distro for ~10 years, roughly 2010-2020, before I got pulled into the "Apple ecosystem". (Still use Linux on all my servers, though!)

    I use(d) Arch, btw šŸ˜›

  • So it's effectively over now with Hulk on the front row?

  • 50 people donating $2 per month would already cover over half of our current infra costs, so I would be extremely happy with that!

The actual current cost (after today's database upgrade) is just under $200 a month, so in the grand scheme of things, it's not a massive sum right now, and people chipping in even a few bucks every month will help out.

  • Hey, you are very welcome to join!

Regarding the blocklist, I don't have any policy to never block any instance, it's just that no other instance has caused issues for lemm.ee yet.

If another instance begins systematically breaking our rules in our communities, or doing anything else that would cause significant harm to lemm.ee, then for sure I wouldn't hesitate to add them to our blocklist!

But I do treat this as a nuclear option - I am a huge fan of the fedearated network in general, and I really think that widespread mutual defederation between healthy instances is not good for the network.

  • I appreciate the offer and I'll keep you in mind!

  • Hey, I would recommend checking out the "How can I find interesting communities" section in our Guide/FAQ. Let me know if anything is unclear there!

  • I think I found an issue and fixed it for now - give it another go and let me know if it worked.

  • Yep, and one scenario is for sure that growth will slow down. But on the other hand, if growth continues at the current place, then in 2-3 months, lemm.ee will be just as big as lemmy.world is today.

And there is also the potential scenario that growth will actually speed up - who knows what will happen when 3rd party Reddit apps start shutting down, for example.

  • Personally, I think it looks pretty good, I like that it's similar to the default but at the same time different thanks to the black nose!

But if our community grows a bit bigger, then I wouldn't be against organizing some democratic logo contest, where users could submit their creations and the community could vote on a winner.

  • Looks great! Applied it to the website, favicons should be updating soon.

Thank you very much for your contribution!

  • Hopefully, we can get some better mod tools into Lemmy soon, which will result in even instances like Beehaw not having to worry about federating with big instances.

I think the main current outcome of decision will be that Lemmy users will be hesitant to start any bigger communities on beehaw.org, but this is probably a positive outcome for Beehaw admins in terms of what their goals are. Users can't create communities on Beehaw anyway, so this point is moot.

As for what this means for lemm.ee: based on their reasoning in the post, I think it's entirely possible that they will keep defederating instances which grow beyond a certain point, and lemm.ee might reach that size soon as well. So I would recommend keeping this in mind while you plan where to house your communities etc - if you're interested in what Beehaw has to offer, then it might be best to preemptively go directly to them, and conversely, if you're more interested in the wider federated network, then building communities on instances such as lemm.ee would be the safer bet.

Edit: I posted a comment asking if beehaw.org might defederate lemm.ee in the future if we grow more, their response for now was that they doubt it.

  • I really appreciate that, I'm sure other users of lemm.ee will as well!

I initially set up GitHub sponsorships for accepting donations, but today I received some feedback that some folks would rather donate on Ko-Fi, so I have a Ko-Fi donations page now as well.

  • If I understand this page right, https://lemm.ee will never show the top post of the day from https://lemmy.blahaj.zone/, https://discuss.tchncs.de/, or https://feddit.uk/.

The top posts from all of those instances will have a chance to appear on your front page of lemm.ee, as long as at least one lemm.ee user has previously subscribed to the community those top posts are posted on!

If you put your front page on "subscribed", then you will see posts from all communities you are subscribed to, regardless of whether these communities are lemmy.ml, feddit.uk or any other instance.

If you put your front page on "all", you will see posts from ALL communities that have at least one subscriber on lemm.ee (again, regardless of what instance these communities are housed on).

So to be clear, you have nothing to worry about! 😃

Let me know if any of this doesn't make sense, I'm happy to explain further.

  • Lemmy will automatically generate a favicon from whatever logo an instance is using, and lemm.ee does not have a logo yet!

If anybody would like to create a nice and simple logo for lemm.ee, then I would be happy to use it. One user had a go here, but unfortunately, that logo does not fit into the circular frame that Lemmy uses, so I could not use that one!

  • I just want to point out that you don't need to use neither Docker nor nginx to run Lemmy.

At the end of the day, the really required pieces are:

    1. lemmy_server binary
    2. Lemmy-ui
    3. pict-rs binary
    4. PostgreSQL database

How you get those things to talk to each other is totally up to you. There's nothing stopping you from just using Apache as a reverse proxy, for example.

One possible Dockerless setup is described here: https://join-lemmy.org/docs/en/administration/from_scratch.html. This should give you some idea of how it could be done.

  • Hey, not bad! Unfortunately, Lemmy crops any icons into a circle, so these get cropped a bit too much. But if you make one that fits inside a circle, I'll put it up.

  • Edit: Now how about a favicon for lemm.ee? ;)

If anybody wants to create some nice looking and simple icon for this instance then I would be happy to use it šŸ˜„

  • If you're getting an error while trying to upload a sub 100kb image, then something is wrong! Let's figure it out, can you share two things with me:

    1. Is there any specific part of the website where the image upload is failing? Your avatar, a post, something else?
    2. Can you share the specific image that is producing an error? You could send it to my e-mail at image.problem@lemm.ee
