  • Can’t you put threads.net on the defederation list anyway, even if there’s nothing to federate yet? That way, there’s not even a chance for it happening.

Well, at this point, we don't even know for sure if threads.net will become their ActivityPub domain, so we can't guarantee anything by doing this. But I will make a post about this topic.

  • At this point, I'm more surprised when he has a good result than when he has a bad one 😅

  • You don't need a new a account for this, just make sure you have "Show NSFW" enabled in your profile.

  • Edit: Let's move further discussion here: https://lemm.ee/post/851217

I don't see any Lemmy <-> Threads interoperability happening in the near future anyway. I haven't looked at Threads very much, but from what I can tell, it's mainly going to be a problem for Mastodon rather than Lemmy. Even from a UX standpoint, it does not seem like Threads is really designed to show Lemmy content (and vice versa).

Having said that, Facebook has shown countless times that it's actively harmful to its users as a platform, so there's not much reason to believe that Threads would be any different. If Threads ever becomes interoperable with Lemmy, then I think defederation would be completely justified, unless they can somehow completely change their approach to ads, user tracking and feed algorithms. If that day ever comes, I will make a decision together with the lemm.ee community on how to proceed. But for now, it's not an issue - there is nothing to even defederate yet.

  • There is an ongoing problem with Lemmy which is causing our servers to crash and not recover, I am trying to keep things running smoothly as I investigate, but unfortunately some users may have been experiencing errors. Sorry!

  • There is no way to host avatars or banners elsewhere. But these are not a huge deal anyway at the moment, as they're only up to 100kb each.

It's possible to delete images right after you upload them (a box pops up with a delete link), but there's no way to delete them later for now. It's something that could be added in a future version of Lemmy, though.

  • Yeah, I would love to increase the limit for supporters of the server. It requires some backend changes, but I am planning to look into it within a few weeks.

  • You should be able to cancel and retry lemmy.world - there's a high chance those will go through now.

With lemmy.ml, there's a much lower chance, better to wait until they upgrade to 0.18.1.

  • Just checking - are you definitely trying to create the community with a lowercase name?

  • Hey, sorry for the slow response, I've been getting a lot of messages and working through them steadily.

Name and display name are both “exJW”

I suspect this is your issue - the actual name of a community must be lowercase. In my browser, it does tell me that the name is in a wrong format when I enter "exJW", but it's not super clear what the correct format is. I believe this error error message will need to be improved.

Anyway, I have created the community myself: https://lemm.ee/c/exjw. Please make a post in here and tag my name, I can then pass ownership of the community to you. At that point, you'll be able to set it up however you like!

  • Thanks for the kind words! To be honest, I'm not tracking my time, as I'm not expecting to break even at all anyway, even before starting to account for the time I've spent 😄

  • This is already implemented in lemmy 0.18.1 for comments and posts!

  • Like Reddit has its redetiquette rules and then each subreddit also has its own rules; is that kinda similar

Yes! lemm.ee does not have a lot of rules, but the ones we do have will apply to all of our users regardless of what community they post on (even if it's a community hosted on kbin). There are two reasons for this:

    1. The most important one - everything posted by lemm.ee users will be hosted on lemm.ee servers.
    2. The second one - our rules are designed to keep the overall impact of our users a positive one on other communities. If our users follow the rules everywhere, then there is much less chance of lemm.ee getting defederated by other instances for moderation issues.

But you're right that community rules may still apply on top of our basic server rules. Each community is free to set up their rules however they want!

On that note besides being shut down what is a good indicator that a server is bad

It's hard to give an objective answer to this, unfortunately. All I can tell you is that I am intent on keeping lemm.ee alive for the long term. I have already paid for bits of our infrastructure for a year in advance!

For point 3 does defederated essentially mean blocked

Yes, users do not see any content from defederated instances.

  • Can you give it another try now? I just deployed some fixes that might help!

Just to be 100% certain - if it still doesn't work, could you also check if it's broken in an incogintio/private browsing tab? That would ensure that requests are being made without any cache.

  • That analogy is not bad!

If I was picking a home server, I would consider:

    1. Do the rules match with my values?
    2. Are there indications that the server is being run well?
    3. Has the server defederated from any other servers which I want to interact with?
  • Hey, I would like to debug this community creation issue, but I haven't been able to reproduce this. Can you walk me through the exact steps that you're taking? What text are you inputting into the creation form?

  • Mostly all images are served through a cache. I would like to also cache some static HTML (such as pages for unauthenticated users), but it breaks due to some users requesting these pages with an Accept header for an activitystream content-type, and I haven't had time to figure out a solution for accounting for the content type in my cache key unfortunately 😅. But if you can do that easily in your cache then for sure you could also cache any static pages for a minute or so.

  • Hey, there is no intention of making light of anybody, but if my use of that word bothers anybody then I don't mind changing it in my post.
