  • According to a study by the Angus Reid Institute, Quebec is still the province where positive sentiments towards CPC leader Pierre Poilievre are the lowest.

That's thinking. Good on you, Québec.

  • Which Canadian province you live in in order of increasing likeliness based on population: Newfoundland (Labrador), New Brunswick, Ontario.

In making this silly comment, I learned that Quebec borders on 4 US states and Ontario 3 (if I read the maps correctly 🤭 - it was a quick look). These provinces border more states than prairie provinces in good part because the prairie provinces' adjacent states are much wider than those south of Quebec and Ontario. This concludes my most Canada-centric comment of the year :P

  • AFAIK Quebec tends not to elect many Conservatives - probably the fewest per capita in Canada provincially/territorially, per the headline. They elect a lot of Liberal and Bloc candidates. My conjecture (which is irrelevant in days like this when the Libs poll pitifully) is that how many Liberals Quebec (which, like Ontario, has a ton of seats) elects, as opposed to Bloc, has a pretty sizeable indirect effect on who forms governments between the Liberals and Conservatives. I should add that I'm ignorant of where the Bloc is on the political spectrum, so my 'Liberals and Bloc split votes' hypothesis is blind in that respect

  • We have almost the dirtiest oil in the world. Per the article, our villain status is won by our role in undermining international fossil fuel reduction initiatives and performing worse than many other comparator countries in following through on international commitments. It important to point out that our exports of O&G are not at all included in these measurements. Our government can get serious about the green energy transition anytime.

  • This is the fourth time Section 107 of the labour code was used to end work stoppages this year. Under section 107, the labour minister “may refer any question to the [Canada Labour] board or direct the board to do such things as the minister deems necessary.”

  • Interesting insights, thanks for sharing! I'm not as savvy as you are in this area but I thought about this more today. I believe Freeland to be pretty similar to Trudeau policy-wise, and Freeland is perhaps seizing an opportunity to lay the groundwork to distinguish herself as fiscally prudent for later leadership bids. All that's to say, I'm not excited about the idea of Freeland taking over for Trudeau. I hope she just stirs things and motivates the LPC to consider more attractive candidates

  • “If she has leadership ambitions in the future, it’s important she not be the cause of sinking the ship,” Queen’s University political studies professor Jonathan Rose said. Publicly separating herself from Trudeau’s spending policies, like the GST holiday and $250 cheques for Canadians, makes sense if she wants to position herself to lead the Liberals post-Trudeau, Rose told Canada’s National Observer.

Like Trudeau, Freeland’s strategy on climate change is not always aligned with climate science. She has supported clean energy tax credits to incentivize growth in renewables, but she has also played a key role promoting fossil fuel extraction — which climate science is clear must be rapidly phased out.

  • I've never really thought about her, but my support for Freeland is at an all-time high. With Trudeau ignoring calls from within his party to step down, the tax holiday and $250 cheque gimmicks, and thinking that working Canadians give a crap about Mark Carney - he has shown he is sooo out of touch, and Freeland's backing off feels like the most principled move available. It's nice to see someone left-ish in politics signaling "the status quo is not good enough - I expect better. Canadians expect better"

Freeland also took a jab at Trudeau's handling of the country's economy, denouncing what she called the government's "costly political gimmicks"

  • This makes me so angry and disgusted. It is a hate crime and violation of human rights. Elder (with dementia) abuse. Structural racism. Predatory behaviour by people who are professional carers in an environment (eg, this department, health facility, health system - I do not know) that is clearly conducive to this kind of abuse.

His niece Kathleen Crowe, speaking on behalf of the family at an Opposition NDP news conference Tuesday, said braids have a deep cultural meaning, and to have them cut off without consent was crushing.

"My uncle was a day school survivor, and in his era it wasn't culturally safe to have long hair. So as he got older, he grew his hair long ... to be able to grow his hair long was very special for him and to his spirit," Crowe said.

"Basically, it was the essence of his spirit. And to have that cut off — it was a huge change in him.

"The braids were found in the garbage on top of soiled adult diapers ... I can't even begin to describe how awful that was."

Crowe told CBC News the family was never provided a reason for why the braids needed to be cut. She added that Eve Adams was supposed to be making all the decisions surrounding her husband's medical needs due to his increasing dementia.

  • The unions have a legitimate concern. As the Bank of Canada and other central banks raised interest rates in response to post-pandemic inflation, many pension plans posted healthy returns. The Public Service Pension Fund was no different. According to PIPSC, the plan performed very well over the last several years, securing returns of 18.4 per cent in 2021 and 10.9 per cent in 2022.

“This isn’t just free money plucked from Santa’s sleigh. This is our members’ money, their deferred salaries. [...] Federal workers contribute 50% of the money that goes into the pension fund, yet are receiving 0% of this added surplus.”

Moreover, the initial $1.9 billion transfer may be just the beginning. The actuarial report tabled by Anand in November projects that the pension surplus could exceed $9 billion by 2028. As PSAC warns, if the government continues to pocket these surpluses, up to $9.3 billion could be removed from the workers’ pension fund. According to the union, the federal government intends to suspend its pension contributions and remove $7.4 billion from the plan over these years.

The decision to withdraw surplus pension funds without worker consultation or input sets a dangerous precedent, potentially signalling to employers across the country that pension assets are theirs and theirs alone. As PSAC warns, “If the government can poach pension funds from its own employees, what’s to stop other employers from following suit and putting millions more at risk?”

This gets to the heart of the matter. Though workers and employers both make contributions, employers ultimately hold all the decision-making power over workers’ pension plans. If unions were able to influence these decisions, surplus funds would likely be used in more progressive ways, and would certainly benefit members more directly.

  • “Over the last two years, we've seen zero progress on the thermal coal export ban, and now we're seeing Canada move in the opposite direction by refusing to even assess the impacts of a major expansion of Canada's largest thermal coal mine,” Julia Levin of Environmental Defence told Canada’s National Observer in a phone interview. The federal government promised to end thermal coal exports by 2030, but Coalspur’s mine expansion project would operate for 11 years, until at least 2036.

  • I think they've given up on this election and hope to return to power after 1 term of PP. They sure aren't governing for the people, just for their own political gains. Cons are obviously worse though. It's so similar to Dems/Repubs in the US

  • Definitely! Ben and Jerry's (the vegan line, almond base) has a chocolate brownie one that's tasty. My favourite is mint chocolate chip from a Toronto/Ontario (for now :) place, https://honeysicecream.ca/ (cashew bases). My cardinal rule for vegan ice cream is to avoid coconut base ice creams unless the flavour is coconut, because the base will invariably impart some flavour

  • reach for the plant-based milks

Yesss! I like chocolate soy milk (a dark chocolate flavour from Silk). For ice cream, cashew base is my fave!

  • (I realize the bike lane law is Ontario-wide and not just Toronto.) Last time Toronto was on the world's radar, I think, was when we had the "crack-smoking Mayor." Who was that again? /s Was that another person from the same Ford family?
