  • Agreed. And I think not seeing any major political party earnestly working for everyday people, versus corporate overlords, is a key ingredient to that hopelessness, carelessness, and nihilism/accelerationism

  • I agree with you, and I think the author of the article would as well. I think you might be misinterpreting the sentence based on my imperfect excerpting. Expansion of inequality is tied to the Reagan era and neoliberal policies; also, centrist and progressive politics have failed to address these effects more recently.

  • The deluge of sports betting ads, including 'sponsored content,' is a travesty. And we won't know the effects on kids growing up in this new ads and access ecosystem for decades. Corporate profits before public health /s

  • That’s not “bad vibes” or whatever the fuck Freeland is calling it. It’s people accurately assessing that they’re poorer now than they used to be.

    Love that 👏👏👏

  • Thanks for the rec!

Basically: parties don’t express a vision, they just look for individual policies to pander to different constituencies.

Totally. And irrespective of what I think of this (not much-- politics is devolving into pure marketing), right-wing parties seem overwhelmingly more successful at it in the current era, which concerns me

  • Mhm. I would think that indicators of the national economy (e.g., GDP) and livability for an average person are "apples and oranges" (ie, quite different things) and only modestly statistically correlated, if that

  • Left: Can I wash your neck?
    Right: Nah.
Left: I'd really like to wash your neck.
    Right: Nah.
    Left: You sure?
    Right: Yeah.
    Left: Still sure?
    Right: Yeah
    ...
Left: How about that neck wash offer?
    Right: gives in
    Silence

  • Of the three main parties there's only one that fights for workers and unions, and it's not the Liberals or Conservatives

  • Vote by mail and democratic participation smothering is also the goal of privatizing so there is less transparency and accountability and more corruption angles.

Deep take. Thanks for sharing. I think we've all seen how the purchase of news and social media was to control (mis/dis)information, so I'm very open-minded to what you're suggesting

  • Step 1. Saturate the news with messaging that one side in a conflict are terrorists (or evil of some kind) to manufacture consent for applying disproportionate violence and punishment to that side.
Step 2. Suppress factual information about what's actually going on.
Step 3. Shut down perspectives sympathetic to the marginalized/dehumanized side in the conflict under the pretences of "both sides" or "political correctness."
Step 4. By now most regular people are saturated in mis/disinformation, and can plainly see that one perspective is heralded as just and the other as extremist or unjust (and publicly punished), and they will fall in line with larger attack on truth and dehumanization of a person or group.

I must credit the oligarchs. They sure knew what they were doing buying up news and social media platforms. Their ability to manufacture consent now, combined with the atrophying of human attention and critical thinking from so much digital stimulation, might be the nail in the coffin of human prosperity.

It's nice to see these activities at TPL scrutinized. Unfortunately, I've seen the same unthinking quest to prioritize the Western Colonialism-backed Zionist perspective and dehumanize Palestinians and silence dissent in most Canadian organizations.

It was interesting to look at the US election analysis. If people actually knew things about the economy, such as whether the US GDP went up last year, they were much much more likely to vote for Harris than Trump. People who don't know those facts voted for Trump.

The more you saturate people in disinformation, the less energy you need to expend on policing and steering their opinions. They will start policing themselves and others, as in the case of these TPL workers.

  • Ask people in the UK well how privatization of services is working out for them 🤡. Privatization of public services is the rich stealing from everyone else

  • Its pretty clearly a “this doesnt make sense to do” article, even ending with “who would even want to buy it”

Good points but it isn't at all clear based on the headline, and there are other ways they could have phrased the headline. I've seen several pro-Freeland CBC headlines with articles that don't really back the headline up lately. I have a hypothesis that curating headlines may be a way higher up editors can apply the spin the even higher-ups tell them to while authors have more independence in the content of article. More people might read the headline than the article. To be clear, I don't know any of this is true, but my trust in mainstream news to do journalism versus PR is at an all-time low after the last year (e.g., US election, ethnic cleansing of Palestine)

  • That is some top-rate voiding. Great photo 🥰

  • That (pillow?) looks like its purpose is to indicate where his spot should be as well :P

  • I agree all around. But I don't know how to interpret the CBC appearing to play sides here so much so soon

  • I feel like the CBC has published several opinion-based pro-Freeland (anti-Trudeau) pieces in the last 48 hours 🧐

  • It's interesting that the LPC's publication of an unexpectedly increased deficit and, perhaps more importantly, the decision to attribute that to a settlement of an Indigenous land claim (that is just under 3% of $538 billion of projected expenses per wiki) coincides with Freeman's resignation. I can't help but wonder if she was trying to distance herself from this; ie, by not announcing it - and as distinguished from the work/policy in the year(s) prior that led to the increased deficit

  • Yeah, I usually edit post when I see this happens and quote a key paragraph or two in the body with the markdown quote feature (>), but it is a nuisance!

Heck, the auto-populate post title feature doesn't work for the The Tyee. Posters do us a service o7

  • Theodore Too, the life-sized tugboat replica of a beloved TV character, is on "temporary leave" after it began to sink in St. Catharines, Ont. By Wednesday morning, it had remained partially submerged at the Port Weller Dry Docks Shipyard on Lake Ontario.

Nova Scotia Premier Tim Houston said on social media Theodore is a "true" icon of the province and shared words of encouragement for the boat's recovery. "It's sad to see our old friend in such a damaged state. I'm happy to read the owner is committed to repairing Theodore and a safe and successful refloat," he said in the post on X. "Stay strong, Theodore!"
