  • Lemmy is the only platform I participate on. I do occasionally check some niche subs on Reddit for hobbies and games I follow for news/suggestions/ideas/etc., but no idle browsing and no contributing, not even through votes.

I also sometimes pop onto Reddit just to manually edit and delete more of my comment history, because the automated tools are apparently only capable of seeing the past year. Once I finally get through everything, I can delete my account, but it's a slow process with years worth of content to remove going back to 2010.

  • Same here. I try not to nostalgia-hole myself too much, because I don't want to fall out of touch with the state of things and end up like a crotchety old person complaining about how great things used to be.

I found myself caring less and less about newer games, and thought I was just getting over gaming in general. But when going back to replay some old favorites on a whim, I realized I still enjoyed them just as much as I used to. I don't know if it's a style thing or just the difference between physical-only and newer digital release models, but it does feel like they don't make games like they used to.

  • Makes me wonder though if Bush wouldn't've used more drones if they were cheaper and readily available earlier in his presidency. At the time, they were still incredibly expensive and unreliable.

No one in government cares how many collateral deaths there are when drones are used, as long as it reduces the number of Americans returning home in boxes. Keeping the voters happy is always the priority.

  • Administrative detentions can be longer. On paper they can hold you about a month, but it can be longer than that with a judge's signoff if they have proof of a crime.

This is typically where the police try to get you to confess to something and drag it out as long and uncomfortably as possible until you do, after which you either get to go free (though you end up on a list for a long time) or you may go to a "black jail"/黑監獄 which is a sort of under-the-table prison.

The terms of release can also sometimes require completion of a rehabilitation program, which is often the voluntary alternative to prison, or getting transferred to a short stay detention center for a few months to perform community service.

  • The previous user is a bit off base with the labor camps idea (not to say that the Xinjiang detention camps for Uyghurs aren't widely known), but it is worth noting that China does utilize administrative detentions/行政拘留 for smaller offenses which are kept statistically separate from prison counts.

If Raiden needs a source, the law covering administrative detentions can be reviewed here:

  • Wow, I can't believe that's actually a real place.

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Murderkill_River

I know -kill is a popular suffix for a stream or river anywhere there was a Dutch colony, but the murder- part threw me off for sure. According to that Wikipedia article at least, it comes from either "moeder" (mother) or "modder" (muddy) and would therefore either mean "mother river" or "muddy river".

  • I had to laugh when I saw a snippet from the news this morning where they played a short clip of other "2 week" promises he made that were based on nothing and led to nothing.

Maybe Trump is just 2 week as a leader.
