Yeah the fact that they didn’t reverse course shows that the toxicity ran from the top. CTO wasn’t the only bad egg. I’d bet that legal got their hands on it and figured that making it right would be admitting to doing wrong.

It turns out that the military isn't actually as right-wing as everyone thought because, unlike the police, when push comes to shove, they will defend the country. They've aged fine if you don't expect the effects to be 2023 effects. If you accept that they were top of the line 1978 effects, it won't bother you at all. What always made me laugh is my mother telling me how they were all dumbfounded, not by laser blasts and cool ship exteriors, but rather the introductory text moving off into infinity. I think she'd have been something like 21 at the time.

This really feels like they are throwing a bunch of nonsense against the wall and hoping that something sticks. I suspect that they won't prevail, however, even with this SCOTUS.

ETA: after thinking about it a bit more, they might be trying to copy the lawsuit against the SEC that SCOTUS is hearing now, hoping that they also receive a get out of jail free card.
