  • Well stated. It's been bothering me all of the people gate-keeping the ability to protest something that EVERY AMERICAN TAXPAYER is funding. On private universities.. sure I guess that's different, those students gave up their rights when they decided to go to a private uni, but public universities?

I get why universities do it, its a bad faith tactic so upper class administrators can find a reason to lick the boot and launch shock troops.

But commenters on Lemmy? I don't get it.

Student or not, they should be able to protest. But maybe there is just something I haven't thought of yet, I'm open to new opinions on this.

  • Yea, I didn't realize it myself, someone pointed it out to me. That doesn't mean anything is wrong with dark humor, I also like it, it's just trickier than I realized. That's what friends are for, we share perspectives.

Thinking back on it, the first time someone shared this to me I was pretty dismissive of the idea. It took me a while to process it and come around. Unfortunately I never got to tell the person they changed my perspective because they were gone before I had the realization.

  • I used to be into dark, offensive jokes until like Dave Chapelle I realized that many of the people weren't laughing at the ridiculous nature of the jokes but because they supported the offense against group X or Y. I felt gross to be part of that, so I mostly left offensive humor behind online. Now I stick to close-knit groups where everyone has a social awareness and understanding of what is over the line and we'll call one another out when necessary.

That said, it is something I enjoy, it's just very hard to do well. I leave it up to Bill Burr and other comedians of that sort who can handle the nuance.

I could just be old too, happens to the best of us.

  • check if you can find customers who have reported receiving notices in the mail or actions taken on their customer accounts. try to find out what the penalties for violating their policy is.

if they are pretty active, you might be stuck resorting to encrypting all of your traffic, aka a vpn

with that vpn and some minor setup in your torrent client you can avoid all of this. for example in qbittorrent there is an option to "bind to interface" and you set it to bind to your vpn interface, so if the vpn goes down all your torrent traffic shuts down.

i use nord, haven't had a single issue in years, and i have received notices at multiple addresses in the past. thus.. had to get vpn if i wanted to continue safely 😞

  • I am not talking about points. I think that you have misinterpreted my message.

I am talking about evangelizing something you are passionate about effectively. Points are one representation of your effectiveness. If you want people to see things your way, at some point this will become important to you.

For now, I'm not sure now is the time for you to think about this. Good luck.

  • I think you'll find if you change your framing, we are mostly agreeing with you.

Or in other words, people aren't down voting your message, they're down voting your delivery.

Just my opinion. Many here dislike capitalism, but they dislike callous disregard for tone more. Humans are funny like that.

  • Ah, he's emotional. People shouldn't be outwardly emotional, especially men. Otherwise I can't absorb the content of their message. /s

Joke aside, did you have a point? One could alternatively say that he's passionate about the fights he chooses. Should we not all aspire to be passionate about the fights we choose?

I suppose I'm not making the connection with what this comment has to do with the content of the video. At which timestamp do you feel he was emotional and how do you feel it effected the overall message?

  • It's not about being an asshole.
It's about verifying that those rights exist.

When we first think, "I would be able to exercise that right in theory, but it would be rude," that tells me that as the oppessor all I need to do is convince people that being rude is worse than being free.

Not everyone is suited to challenge authority, but if no one feels safe doing so then the dominoes of fascism have already begun to fall.

The least we can do is film, document, report, and support those who make the challenge.
