  • I didn't see any abuse, but I did notice how livid some people were about the whole thing. I am still at a loss as to how the original statement could cause such outrage. I took it as some hyperbole to highlight a serious issue. That's nothing any remotely stable person takes offence at. Any guy berating other people over dumb shit like this is exactly the kind of man the original statement was about.

  • Yeah. There's, sadly, room in the world for more than one murderous government. I also have no doubt that, if Hamas had the opportunity, they would kill all Israelis. But that is still no excuse for the ongoing slaughter the IDF is committing. An atrocity remains an atrocity.

  • I used OpenBSD on servers for years. I don't think it's suited as a daily driver, especially not with a desktop. I absolutely love pf and miss it dearly, though. iptables and nftables are utter shit compared to the glory that is pf. Yes, there is some hyperbole in that statement, but only some.

  • The problem is that Chinese models are so cheap because of government subsidies and slave labor. I still think that Western models are too expensive because of plain greed, but the Chinese models are not without problems either.

  • I mean, I just spelled it out for you and you still refuse to understand. It's an art project in, again, a small museum at the very end of the world that has very clear intentions. Calling that "gross discrimination" is so incredibly stupid. If you so obviously refuse to see the motive behind the art you are part of the problem the museum wants to address with this.

  • I am actually astonished by how fragile so many men are. I just commented in a different thread, about the museum in Tasmania that excludes men, and it's just more of what we see here. They take anything remotely negative as a personal attack and are completely unable (or unwilling) to see these statements as anything but an attack. I do think that this attitude is somehow part of the problem, as it makes it impossible to have a meaningful discussion about serious issues without them immediately going "but...!"

  • I see you like playing the victim. Hyperbole can be used to highlight an issue. And that's what I see the "I'd rather meet a bear in the woods" statement as. It's not to be taken at face value, but rather to highlight a serious issue. If you get butthurt over something like that, you might consider that you are part of the problem. I am a man and I find it ridiculous to feel insulted over this. Of course most men don't harm women at every opportunity. But there's enough of this kind of man for many women to feel unsafe in many situations. Why can't that be addressed without everybody going up in arms?

  • From https://www.drugs.com/medical-answers/zolgensma-expensive-3552644/

Zolgensma is a one-time-only gene therapy treatment for children aged less than two years with spinal muscular atrophy (SMA) that costs $2.1 million for the single treatment. The reason Zolgensma is so expensive is because that is the price Novartis has decided it is worth because it “dramatically transforms the lives of families affected by this devastating disease” and the claimed cost of bringing new drugs to market. But this price is not without controversy. For a start, the early development of Zolgensma was financed by the National Institutes of Health and several charities devoted to finding treatments for SMA, including many U.S. charities such as Sophia’s Cure, Cure SMA, Getty Owl Foundation, Fighting SMA, Jadon’s Hope Foundation, the Gwendolyn Strong Foundation, and Miracle for Madison. Many of these charities use donations by patient families and friends to subsidize research and clinical trials into new medicines for SMA. The CEO of Novartis, Vas Narasimhan, argues that gene therapies represent a medical breakthrough in the way that they offer hope of a cure for deadly genetic diseases with a single dose. In some cases, the alternative is a multi-dose treatment with incremental improvements. For example, an alternative to Zolgensma is Spinraza that is taken four times a year for life. The list price is $750,000 for the first year and then $350,000 per year after that, so about $4 million a decade. But how do they calculate the actual cost? Many companies use a value-based pricing model which calculates the cost based on how many years of life gained as well as taking into account the effectiveness of the drug. But this means putting a price on how much a life is worth, as well as ensuring the company makes a reasonable margin on their investment. Little is disclosed about the true cost of bringing a new drug to market, and Novartis didn’t develop Zolgensma but acquired it through the $8.7 billion purchase of US firm AveXis.

So there is no tangible reason why it's this expensive.

  • This is some serious "keep hitting yourself" material. It's not like you can decide to not be incarcerated. $7300-$29200 of debt per year spent in prison. Man, that is some vicious shit. Nobody will be able to convince me that this is not specifically designed to keep people down forever.
