I’ve only recently become aware of the issue and that’s the way it feels.

But in the absence of a definitive test I think folks are concerned that they will be stuck with a CPU that continues to degrade prematurely. That seems like a valid concern.

I like that they tried to cover the smell of dirty money with baking soda.

I tried to order some components on Digikey a few months ago and I’m still mentally scarred. Probably did a few hundred of those things over the course of 2 weeks.

IDK Boeing is doing a good enough job in the air, maybe it’s time to move on to ground based targets.

TSA would just set up a checkpoint-checkpoint and add a few hours to our departures… yeah, I think this is going to work for everyone!

That’s actually way more common than the government wants you to believe;-)

It’s been a few years, but they are white round pads, probably 3 inches wide. I’m not sure what’s on the pad, probably a solvent of some kind.

The pads go in a machine about the size of an larger microwave oven which I believe uses NMR to scan for nitrates and other kinds of explosive residue.

It was a pair of highschool level sumo robots, lots of wires and motors and gears.

Yeah, but just like an M-80 so the whole checkpoint is splattered with drink and hand lotion.

Most of the airports in the US have some sort or chemical detector too. I always get my hands swapped going through PDX because I brought so scary looking circuit boards with my carryon 5 years ago.

Never fails to amuse me that in order to fight to “threat” of binary explosives i.e. two liquids that explode when mixed together…

I’m not mad at it :-) It was written for people who were familiar with the situation and posted in a subject matter specific forum.

24 hours later I feel like a bit of an ass. I thought about how many times I’ve picked up a technical article and wished for a bit less background… it’s kind of nice that we don’t have to talk about the whole history of OSS before getting to the news/subject.

This is the second article today that starts somewhere in the middle, then wanders around aimlessly retracing its own steps.

Anyone else immediately get a migraine trying to read the first 2 paragraphs/sentences of that article?

For sure… I was trying to imply that they had a bunch of jokes specifically about him getting shot at, which might now be considered in poor taste.

I really hope it’s just because they didn’t have time to rewrite the jokes ;-)

Worst experience. Fairly new at a dotcom and moving from the satellite office to the big-time (same building as these loosers who were trying to do DVDs by mail, LOL ;-) and getting the shown around and introduced to various department heads.

Met the VP of IT and Sr. Systems admin, joked that it looked like they lived there… found out they had been battling a nasty virus all weekend that had infected most of our desktops and was evading our standard AV package, it was taking several runs of a special cleaner or just a wipe/reinstall.

Got introduced to lots of other folks, learned many more things, almost entirely forgot about the virus. A few hours later I’m waiting for my boss to finish a “quick” meeting I wasn’t invited to and getting bored. But I want to seem like a responsible employee (and I was caught up with /. from earlier in the day) so I decided to log in and check my email.

And the inbox boings start. Don’t even have a functioning desktop yet and I can literally hear the virus spreading across the office. I’d manage to pick an old desktop in the IT area that hadn’t been cleaned yet. Fortunately a lot of computers were still off from the cleanup effort, so my fuckup was limited to a 6-7 systems, but that was still hours of additional work for the small IT team after they had already given up their weekend.

It’s definitely not the worst virus I’ve ever had to deal with with. But it was definitely the most visible/shameful virus related fuckup I’ve ever been responsible for.

Wouldn’t work unless it was more expensive or fragile than the router ;-)
