  • Doesn’t fit on thicker chains because the clasp is to small??? How does this apply to a pin or broach or whatever this ugly turd of a government collectable is.

  • People that alread get drunk at home uninterested in paying more for booze. Who could have ever predicted this?

  • I was trying to dream up the justification for this rule that wasn’t about mitigating the ick-factor and fell short… I guess if the machines learn how to beguile us by forming relationships then they could be used to manipulate people honeypot style?

Honestly the only point I set out to make was that people were probably working on virtual girlfriends for weeks (months?) before they were banned. They had probably been submitted to the store already and the article was trying to drum up panic.

  • I’m not an authority on the subject, but that was my understanding from the reporting surrounding Open AI’s recent kerfuffle. That their complex management structure was part of some elaborate strategy to promote the development of ethical AI.

Sounded a bit sus to me, but clearly smarter folks think it’s a good way to spend money.

  • LOL

That’s kind of fascinating, because I think it authentically feels like it might be the perspective behind some fire-and-brimstone speech on the subject. I was kind of hopping for the sermon personally, but this makes you feel like southern baptist preachers could be people too ;-)

  • I’m not sure there’s anything wrong with it, that’s what the article reported on as though it were some sort of harbinger of doom… Felt like my smarmy retorts would be slightly less punchy if I had opened up a side discussion regarding appropriate uses for AI. I suppose part of my motivation was that it seemed incredibly innocent relatively speaking.

Open AI claims to be in this to save humanity from Skynet, this seems like a fairly pathetic attempt keep their store from filling up with “disreputable” content before… what exactly I don’t know. The killer app for AI that would be magically devoid of controversy?

  • [Yawn]

I’m all for a bit of Ai panic, but this is the worst kind of desperate journalism.

    The facts as reported:

    • 1 day before opening the doors of their new online store OAi updated their policy to ban comfort-bots and bad-bots.
    • On opening day there are 7 Ai girlfriends available for purchase/download.

The articles conclusion: Ai regulation is doomed to fail and the machines will wipe out humanity.

  • Yes. Also yes.

I remember when Tom’s hardware was one German dentist and washing machines were to primitive to pick up a phone… you’d think they’d have done something cool by now like make them fold our clothes for us. The future is lame.

  • For now, it looks like the favored answer to the data mystery is to blame Asus for misreporting it. We may never know what happened with Johnie, who is now running his LG washing machine offline.

Another relatively innocent reason for the supposed high volume of uploads could be an error in the Asus router firmware. In a follow-up post a day after his initial Tweet, Johnie noted “inaccuracy in the ASUS router tool.” Other LG smart washing machine users showed device data use from their apps. It turns out that these appliances more typically use less than 1MB per day.

  • The US government: Winning where it can for the last 100 years… 🥱

  • You would really think so right? At this point I’m curious WTF it’s good for.

  • I’m not sure I have a single stand-out favorite, I remember the metcal soldering station unboxing just because I was gobsmacked by the price and the automatic tip cleaner.

But the ones I’m talking about are just the random laptop repair where he would casually troubleshoot something apple had told the customer was unrepairable. Cracking jokes about the latest cease-and-desist letter he’d received as he pulls up apple schematics watermarked with some Russian website and replaces a burnt out component :-)

  • Anyone else miss his old videos? No doubt he’s the repair man we need right now, but the nostalgia is strong this morning :-|

  • Yeah, I suppose if you were going to surveil everyone’s chatter screenshots would be a fairly inefficient way to go about it.

  • The complaint also said a senior human resources official had illegally created the impression of surveillance when she showed workers involved in drafting the letter screen shots of a chat they had conducted on a messaging app.

    Sounds like surveillance…

  • Box of saltine crackers and Betty Crocker chocolate frosting, just a few will do ya.

  • No, those 3 posts this year clearly indicate a 200% increase in post frequency year over year… we’re blowing the fuck up baby!

  • I’m on board now. Law and Justice had the largest single share at 35% and would thus receive 55% control of parliament under Italy’s proposed system, but with 52% of the population preferring a different mix of leadership.
