  • That was a crazy time.

I still have my HTC Universal, which was an absolute flagship in 2005.

    My next phone was a Motorola Droid 3, a mit-ranger from 2011.

If you put both of them side by side, these phones could be from different planets.

  • Minimum order quantity for the populated board is 2. That costs, iirc, around €20 for both plus shipping (if you are patient, that's a few more €).

This micro soldering part can by now be ordered to be included in the assembly, so that you don't have to solder it. I haven't tried the process of ordering extended parts from JLCPCB, but if that works, that's another ~€10. Otherwise you'll have to source it yourself and end up with a similar price.

The Blackberry keyboards go for €3-6 on Aliexpress.

A 5-pack of the USB connectors is about €10 on Amazon, but on Ali you can get one for ~€1.

That's all the electronics, so for two of them, that's about €40-50.

You also need a 3D print, which costs around €1 if you print it yourself or get a friend to do it. If you order it, that can be anything from €10 to €50. The cost of these services varies wildly. You might need to print it multiple times to get the tolerances exactly right. So if you get access to a printer, that would save a lot of money.

But all in all, if you manage to build two and both work fine, there are lots of people on Lemmy, Reddit or Crackberry who offered me to pay €100 for a ready-made one.

  • They are really nice. I wouldn't want to go without one of these.

It does require the full set of "maker skills", so it's not that easy to make. If I get some time, I could maybe cut down on the need for soldering.

What you could do, though, is ask someone at fiverr to make it for you.

You need someone with Blender skills to adjust the 3D print file to your phone.

You need to get it printed (you can use any 3D print service for that, e.g. JLCPCB).

You need to order the PCB (that's easy, no need for someone else here).

You need to solder the two hand-solder components onto the PCB. The cheapest way is probably to get a phone/laptop repair shop to do it for you. For someone with good soldering skills, that's like 5min of work. They do that for very cheap.

  • If you go for used devices, you can quite easily get an outdated entry level phone for free and a decently useable one for <€30.

You can even get new entry level phones for as cheap as €70.

So it's very much a market where you can spend whatever you want.

A flagship phone is priced like a luxurity toy, because that's exactly what it is.

And an entry level phone is incredibly cheap so that people who have no money can still get one. €70 with 2 years of usage is less than €3/month (realistically though, if you are in this kind of situation, you hold on to a phone for much longer).

Over here, if you are poor enough, you'll even get a free phone plan.

  • That's definitely a healthy way of dealing with that.

But with this way, something like Linux, Distros, Firefox, Blender or LibreOffice would have never happened. There are those who want to build retail-level open source software, mostly out of idealism, and then you are stuck between a non-monetizable rock and a toxic hard place.

But I totally agree with you, unless you are super idealistic, your way of handling it is probably the most healthy one and the one that will cause you the least amount of trouble. And it's also what I do, except when I sometimes do get idealistic.

  • Yeah, my post was a bit of hyperbole, but I've been to a fancy restaurant a while ago, where they did make you pay for cutlery and also for the table separately.

    But they didn't have a take-away option.

  • That's basically right. But it's quite a difference what you have to do to scratch your itch, and what you need to do for it to be useful for others.

If you do it for yourself, there are no tests or documentation or even a GUI. It's quick and dirty, all configuration is hardcoded. If you need a different config, you'll just change the code.

All that doesn't really fly if you expect someone else to use the project.

On the other side, especially if it's too polished, idiots will perceive the project as being a commercial one and demand that you do what they want.

If you don't know the stories, maybe read up on the maintainer of core-js or Marcel Bokhorst. These two people complained about how tough it is to make good open source software. Both talked specifically about their toxic audience. So in turn the audience ridiculed them and they even received death threats.

  • Hey, look at our cheap food!

Oh, btw, we didn't tell you, but it's actually 18% more expensive than the prices on the menu.

Also, it's $10 extra for the plates and silverware.

And we also charge you for eating in as well, that's another $10.

And if you don't tip on top of that, we get really angry.

Please leave a 5 star review!

  • And wouldn't that completely shift worldwide powerbalanes for centuries to come?

For example, would WW2 have happened if France had been a global superpower instead of a pushover?

Would the american revolution have happened with another colonial ruler?

Without that example, would the french revolution have happened?

Without both revolutions, would democracy be a thing by now, or would we still have totalitarian monarchies?

You know the butterfly effect? It's the same except we aren't killing a butterfly but instead one of the superpower nations of that time.

  • Of course it wouldn't stop colonialization, but it would change the future quite a lot.

    • No English-speaking superpowers/English as lingua franca
    • No Commonwealth
    • No wide-spread anglo common law based legal systems
    • Superpowers/alliances would be totally mixed up up to now.
    • China could have developed totally different due to them not constantly losing against the English.
    • No colonialization of the Welsh, Scots, Irish by the English

I think that should shake up the timeline quite a bit.

  • I was focussing on changing the timeline, not on deterring nations from doing something. Without English colonializers, there would have certainly been other colonizers, but e.g. the whole China situation would have likely been very different. There would not be a dominant anglo culture right now. No English-speaking USA, no English-speaking Australia, no large countries with an anglo common law-based legal system.

It would change the timeline quite a bit.
