  • It's true that you can choose not to give Google the location data or any other thing for that matter, but wouldn't that hinder the functionality of the apps that need it? I believe there is no choice here, unless I'm missing something.

If you want to use something like Pokemon Go or whatever, your data is going to go to Google. Or if you use apps that use the Google notification servers, wouldn't Google be able to use that data (I don't know if they're able to actually read the notifications, I'm just assuming).

I'm not shilling for OEM ROMs or attacking anything, but I wanna feel actually justified in the hassle and potential downgrade of the digital experience when I move to another ROM.

  • Yeah but those are the issues that I have. The idea is to have a private phone where you don't have to worry about Google harvesting your data and keeping it forever. But when you have an OS that has all these features and then use the Google services that take all that data, what is the point?

Also it’s quite a security issue since it needs signature spoofing to work which is insecure by definition.

According to the last paragraph here, the spoofing at least in Calyx is limited to only microG. It's less secure than a sandboxed thing, but I don't think it's gonna be that bad.

  • That actually looks really amazing! I really want more services to actually compel users to pay to support them, and make it a good decision to do so. I think this is the best suggestion so far. Thanks mate!

  • The point is to be more nuanced and actually get to the bottom of why she did what she did. By default, people don't have the capacity to just straight up murder helpless children. If someone does that, something is seriously wrong. What happened in this case? Is it mental illness? Is that nurse this incompetent (unlikely)? Why was this left unchecked for so long since doctors have seemingly voiced some concerns in the past?

Even if turns out to be mental illness, that doesn't mean that she should go back to business with a warning, she is still a threat to other people.

  • For the variability point, they do tests in as a controlled environment as they could, and do the tests until they get consistent data. But what do you mean by significance test and how can they do it?

I agree they're not the gold standard but they're the best we got in terms of independent third party testers, and I would assume they're more than good enough for tech stuff.

  • I agree that golang is being dumb when you don't even have the option to tell it that this is a testing env or something. But the thing about syntax highlighting is not the same. One is about handholding the developer so much that it makes it even more difficult to develop, and the other is a completely optional feature that is so uselful and non intrusive that even wizardly editors like emacs use it.

  • The problem with the author is the idea of lumping together some good reasons to avoid Brave and some really bad reasons. The idea that the company behind brave depends on ads for revenue is good reasoning, the fact that they have a volatile cryptocurrency to use as payment is another. But when you mention that the founder is a bigot, or that he was associated with Peter Theil, or that they CONSIDERED a shady ad practice are not really reasons to avoid the product.

In the end, you want to have some competition in the browser market (that means not using the same base browser with a skin and some features). I would recommend Firefox over Brave for that reason alone.

  • Why would people do this? We want the hughest amount of users we can, and for most people to believe in FOSS or even copyleft philosophy, but this just pushes people away. Just use whatever app you like best and maybe donate to incentivize the app you believe in. But to just relenlessly mock non-FOSS apps only hurts the community and doesn't foster growth.

    • I know about Fairphone but the specs are a bit limited IMO.
    • I do have a Pixel with the stock (I know bad idea) ROM but I rooted it. I do have the kdrag0n Safetynet fix, but there is one app that somehow finds out about it. I guess one app out of however many I have is not too bad now that I think about it.
    • I haven't really looked too far into this, but I assume that they build some tamper detection in the seat warmers (unless they're incompetent or lazy). But the good news is that the seat warming subscription is no longer there.
    • For this one I was just looking for things to complain about. I have no subscriptions for media and just buy the physical stuff (or digital from Bandcamp).

I guess it's not a guarantee that DRM would be that proliferated and I can avoid it. I was being way to pessimistic at the time.

    Thanks for uplifting words mate!
