  • The company used to have it set up so in order to trigger an audio alert using "Find My Device" so you could actually, you know, find your device, you had to have that device in your hand and respond to a security prompt.

It is my firm belief that Google employees never use their own products.

  • I hope you're right about the Liberals pushing back, but I have no doubt in my mind that if the situation were reversed, Poilievre would delay the byelection for as long as possible and attempt to force the Opposition leader out of Stornoway, just to be as disruptive and difficult as possible.

  • Carney and his party are engaging in "fair dealing" and expecting the same in return.

Democrats in the U.S. have been making that same mistake for decades. The person and party Poilievre adores and emulates, (Trump, Republicans and their appointed judges) do exactly as they please and screw the opposition for fun -- damn the constitution, voters, laws and any possible sense of fairness. The U.S. is experiencing the result of the Democrat's assumption of "fair dealing" and it has resulted in a fascist regime, citizens being kidnapped and deported, disastrous tariffs, laws ignored, and the Constitution undermined.

IMO Carney's brought a chess set to a gun fight and is playing into Poiliere's hands.

  • No matter what distro you choose, expect a learning curve. Depending on your usage it can be minor or significant. You may find a simple task doesn't work as you expect in Linux and it's time consuming to figure it out. If you run Windows in a virtual machine on Linux or set up a dual boot system you can switch back and get the task done easily, and figure out how things work at your leisure.

When I first switched I went back to Windows a couple of times a week for simple tasks that I didn't know how to complete in Linux. (It usually was an issue with figuring out a new application and rarely had anything to do with the OS itself.) After a couple of months I found I was wasn't using Windows much, and in less than a year I was able to delete the Windows partition.

  • The bulb resets are known to TP-Link and they created a firmware version that fixed it. The company didn't release the update and now TP-Link support reps deny that the new firmware exists, so obviously the communication failures and resets are design intent.

  • Just bought some Third Reality bulbs to replace TP-Link wifi bulbs a couple of weeks ago. (The TP-Link bulbs require continual communication with TP-Link's Chinese servers or they reset every few seconds.)

Zigbee2MQTT detects the Third Reality bulbs immediately and they have been working perfectly. The same goes for TR power monitoring smart plugs.

  • CopyQ is an advanced clipboard manager. Gimp is great but Pinta is easy for quick, minor image adjustments. System Monitor is an applet that displays system information by double clicking on a taskbar icon. If you use VPNs, the IP Indicator applet shows the country of your public IP or customized icon when matching ISP is found.

  • That seems like you’re just replicating what the AC’s thermostat is doing.

In my experience the thermostats of window units are crappy at regulating room temperature. Even so, did you miss this part of the post?:

Even if the compressor is not running the fan runs 24/7 until it is physically switched off.

The OP is planning on letting the unit run for 10 minutes and then turn it off, a much less effective solution than setting up a remote temperature sensor and power monitoring switch, and much better than having to control room temperature by adjusting knob that's "labeled from 1 to 8 with 1 being warm and 8 being coldest."

  • If I had that setup, I'd use a power monitoring plug with a room temperature sensor. The combination of power monitoring and a temperature sensor would provide an amazing amount of flexibility.

For instance you can monitor when the compressor shuts off (because the current draw will drop significantly) and use the plug to shut off the entire unit, then power it on when the room temperature rises to a set point. I'd change that temperature setting depending on the time of day and possibly add a occupancy sensor or use light switches to enable and disable the AC when someone's there. It would take some tweaking to get it working properly, but you should be able to make your room more comfortable and save energy with this kind of setup.

  • I've revived a Dell Venue battery the laptop reported as dead. Connecting several alkaline batteries in series to provide a voltage slightly higher than the Dell battery's rated voltage and using them charge the Li-ion battery did the trick. After charging the Dell battery for about 10 minutes I reinstalled it, the laptop recognized it and it worked normally from that point on.
