  • Honestly, I think it looks substantially cleaner than the new reddit. Also, a lot more performant, which goes a long way towards the overall vibe of the UI.

  • Lurker's Lounge?

  • This exactly. It's pretty hard to imagine that a weighted sort algorithm is really so complex that it couldn't have been implemented during the last migratory wave

  • I've been really surprised that the blanket promise to pay the legal bills of folks who may or may not be operating under fair use has not been a bigger part of this conversation. Particularly as this new line of user customized gpt products already includes PAYING the people who build these sometimes illegal products. The money incinerator continues.

  • metric FUCKTONS less toxicity

I really wish this were true but we are absolutely sliding in the direction of more toxicity and I think it's a large part of why users are leaving. What's more is that there's not nearly enough actually insightful commenting to make up for it. Reddit has absolutely lost a lot of that too but you can usually still find something on the field of bullshit. Very frequently I can read 20-30 comments here and not see a single insightful or original thought.

  • I think it very much matters WHY Lemmy is losing users. If it's a fixable problem, well then we should fix it gahdamnit

  • They were probably more swayed by the loss of their upcoming payout than any love for Altman. Increasingly sounds like Ilya just bungled the timing

  • Google paying them an absolute shitload of money (still pretty small compared to what Google pays Apple). It'd be pretty hard to get the donations to make up a missing half billion.

  • Are we really worst off without Pop-White-Feminism from a website that made articles about the virtue of beating their boyfriends? Eeerh… I don’t known, I’m not convinced.

This exactly. What's more is, I think far too much energy has been spent lamenting the loss of Jezebel without working towards a more modern alternative whose roots aren't firmly in shallow feminism and celebrity gossip. A lot of firms from this last wave of journalistic closures have spun off into things that reveal that the old publishers were one of the biggest problems with the journalism overall (See 404media, who interestingly put out an article much to the same effect as the OP) and from the sounds of it Jezebel was always one of the worst offenders.

  • I forgot about this project. Really glad somebody's working on this.

  • It's at least available if you're self-hosting.

  • It now has engines for searching lemmy too

  • As I see it, there are three major ways a fork could gain significant standing among the community:

    • They could get features out faster. Scaled sort would've been absolutely pivotal during a migrationary wave, as it would have allowed small communities to gain exposure on the front page in a far more natural and organic way. Currently new communities are largely dependent on the community spotlight subs and there's not a whole lot of ways to actually gain momentum after that initial posting.
    • They could improve performance and appeal to admins. The current cost of hosting Lemmy is fairly bloated from my understanding.
    • They could invest in moderation. Beehaw would certainly be interested.

I honestly think any one of these is easily manageable by a handful of people in off time. Other parts of the fediverse of similar size are chock full of forks.

  • I would love to contribute but I don't have the experience for a fork. This is kind of the essence of the whole problem though. Plenty of unutilized contributors who could be driving this project forward but are having a hard time getting involved.

  • If interoperability were improved, Mastodon and Lemmy may be able to standin for discovery algorithms in the short term.

  • It’s one thing if it’s just a couple of devs working on the project and trying their best, it’s an entirely different thing when a couple of devs are shutting out large numbers of contributors (frequently subject matter experts which they desperately need at this point) over relatively trivial issues.

To the detriment of the community, the admins, and the concept of the fediverse overall.

  • Strange take.

Not for folks who have been following the development. It’s one thing if it’s just a couple of devs working on the project and trying their best, it’s an entirely different thing when a couple of devs are shutting out large numbers of contributors (frequently subject matter experts which they desperately need at this point) over relatively trivial issues. It's become a pattern and will almost certainly continue. At this point a significant number of users have been lost because the devs have been largely unable to capitalize on previous waves on growth due to slow development. Because of all this Lemmy has an awful reputation even among the rest of the fediverse and particularly among people who have tried to contribute. A fork would probably be a significant improvement as far as brand perception goes.
