  • I mean, I explained why I don't really need a basic therapist beyond just going over the basics of CBT, which I've already done now... but sure, ok, thanks?

For what its worth, I'm not the single downvote your comment here has.

  • Fair point.

But we're on .world here, ie Reddit 2.0, ie, almost everyone is much closer to a normie who is way more uninformed than they think they are and way more confident than they should be.

    But also, again... fair point.

  • I would like to see a river of geckos some time in my lifr, that sounds fascinating haha!

As to whether or not its serious... I dunno, sure yeah, could be fake, could be real, no real way of knowing, but interacting with an asshat of a landlord has been a pretty common occurence in my life, seems at least plausible to me.

  • A Link Through Time?

Do you mean A Link To The Past?

    ???

The Zelda games I've played that feature time travel basically just have a 'past world' and 'future world'.

    ...

Using my original analogy.... So your 2D game is your screen.

The 3rd dimension would be into the screen, or toward your face.

A past/future flip is just two layers.

I'm trying to think of something thats more like... 10s, 100s, 1000s of 'layers', very fundamentally implemented as a basic game mechanic.

Like, you'd need to be weaving through time just as much as a normal game has you weaving through space, you'd have some puzzles or fights where you'd need to be moving through time and space simultaneously...

    Apparently Braid is like this?

    ...

Majora's Mask is arguably the closest to this of any Zelda game, in that you csn functionally jump to many, many more than just two layers, tons and tons if events and npc like... world paths put them in different places at different exact times, you can Double Time song half a day into the future, unless you're doing some crazy speedrun you're probably gonna need to rewind the clock many times in a normal playthrough.

I'll have to check out Portal 2 w/ time travel though, haven't played that.

  • The idea would be that you could move in the depth axis just as an fps player (or maybe arcady spaceship or aircraft game?) moves through all 3 dimensions.

Though honestly I don't play many 2d platformers, what I've seen is more of a ... reset or rewind kind of paradigm, or jump forward in time, fastforward, or pause.

I'm thinking of some kind of... like you'd have to solve certain environment puzzles, defeat certain enemies, by deftly and precisely navigating through time as much as deftly executing platform jumps and 2d combat.

    EDIT:

Like maybe imagine this with either a DPad + Stick or Twin Stick setup.

The one of those is your normal 2d movement, the other has one axis that is time forward/backward.

Or, maybe, left right is side to side, your character is some kind of unable to jump or crouch, but instead time phases with up/down?

(jump and crouch are replaced by... gravity temporarily off, gravity temporarily x 4?)

Pair it with maybe some kind of time travel stamina/mana meter, you gain more 'endursnce' with experience or after getting a treasure or accomplishing some task.

Could I guess also work with a top down or 2.5 uh, perspective as well, I guess?

  • Ah, I'm an elf from the woodlands (rainy part of PNW), not familiar with them personally.

I did once trek east toward Mordor and freeze up and slowly retreated from an aggrevated rattlesnake in the badlands... can't say I ever saw a gecko though.

... But I have seen a good number of newts back home. They can be ... mildly neurotoxic, but they thankfully tend to stay in their bogs and such.

  • Well now you've met a statistician, a person with an Econ degree, specialization in Econometrics who is telling you the BLS numbers have been garbage for 2 years, based off of how many revisions they have to keep doing, and the magnitude of those adjustments.

I've been a professional data analyst at multiple large companies for years, I'm not going to explain this further unless you want to pay me for the full 40 page methodology breakdown.

Real time economics is not hard for me, it was my career until I retired.

Damn near every single measurable metric in the US economy beyond what's in the most easy to consume, most non specialist oriented media is screaming that everything is going tits up.

Hey when was the last time the Fed had to significantly jump into the Repo market to bail it out?

Oh, right, it was this past week.

I'm not going to bother to list out every single indicator/methodology I consider because 1) I'd break the lemmy comment post character limit (its 10k, btw) and 2) I'm used to being paid for such detail.

  • The BLS jobs estimate report is utterly garbage data.

Go look back over the last year or two.

Look at how many times, and how many jobs they revised down from the report 1 or 2 months prior.

All the idiots that watch Jim Cramer for financial advice are the same idiots that never bother to follow up on the BLS revisions.

Also, the BLS jobs estimate is an estimate that goes through a whole bunch of layers of dependency on other statistics like estimated populations growth.

Meanwhile the ADP is much more directly based on actual payrolls, from actual money going out to actual employees.

You should maybe learn how to actually compare the methodologies behind various sources of data before you accuse someone of cherry picking.

    ...

Also the unemployment rates that are widely reported on don't count people who've been unemployed so long that they fall out of the labor force.

In our modern economy, if you fall off the treadmill, you stay unemployed for that long, you'll likely never get hired in that field again, or at least not without having to start out at an entry level or junior position, because of how absurd companies are with job requirements, how every job opening has 1000 applicants in 72 hrs, how something like 2/3rds of those job openings are fake and will never hire anyone.

  • It is entirely disingenuous to just pretend that LLMs are not being widely promoted, marketed, and discussed as AGI, as a superintelligence that people are familiar with from SciFi shows/movies, that is vastly more capable and knowledgeable than basically any single human.

Yes, people who actually understand tech understand that LLMs are not AGI, that your metaphor of wrong tool wrong job is apt.

... But seemingly about +90% of humanity, including the people who own and profit from LLMs, including all the other business owners/managers who just want to lower their employee headcount ... do not understand this, that an LLM is actually basically an extremely advanced text autocorrect system, that frequently and confidently lies, spits out nonsense, hallucinates, etc.

If you think it isn't reasonable to continuously point out that LLMs are not superintelligences, then you likely live in a bubble of tech nerds who probably still think their jobs or retirement are secure.

    They're not.

If corpos keep smashing """AI""" into basically every industry to replace as many workers as possible... the economy will collapse, as capitalism doesn't work without consumers who have jobs, and an avalanche of errors will cascade and snowball through every system that replaces humans with them...

...and even if those two things were not broadly true...

...the amount of literal power/energy, clean water and financial capital that is required to run the whole economy on these services is wildly unsustainable, both short term economically, and medium term ecologically.

  • ... As best I can tell...

He actually, legally changed his first name to Thor.

And he has gone by Thor for... at least 5 years?... in his Twitch streaming career.

I fully agree this is an insult to the old Gods, but ... Thor is apparently literally his actual name.

His older username / online handle was 'Maldavius Figtree' or something like that, can't say I am aware of his actual birth name.

  • Well, there's at least two aspects here:

    Fucking Thor, PirateSoftware.

Up untill Ross posted his 'SKG is dead' video... Thor had by far gotten the most views of anyone with a video discussing SKG.

And Thor... well, he was anti-SKG, and had been spreading a bunch of objectively false bullshit about it, actual FUDD.

So... about half of Ross's video was dedicated to pointing out how Thor was wildly misunderstanding things, and fairly graciously and politely trying to correct these misconceptions.

So here's the two sort of things at play I see, in terms of 'why sudden surge now?'

    1. Thor was just shown to be objectively, factually wrong. Thus, the immediate effect of this would be to reiterate and clarify and reinforce with more specificity what SKG actually is... and that could directly convince people to give a damn, to believe in Ross's SKG over Thor's misunderstandings and mischaracterizations.

But uh, almost certainly much, much more relevant:

    1. Ross doing (1) created an absolute drama shit storm via the way youtube works now... which is very much just drama mongers and commentators reporting on e-drama. (1) kicked off an actual, organic, honest to god, truly viral explosion of many, many people who'd basically never heard of any of this before, mostly dogpiling on Thor for being such a disingenuous, egotistical asshole and liar, but also of course encouraging people to sign the SKG petition.

This kind of absurd, out of nowhere explosion of popularity of some topic, idea, meme, whatever, that spreads from person to person to person, from the ground up instead of top down... this is what something going 'viral' originally meant in the earlier days of the internet, 15 to 20 ish years ago.

You know, it spreads, from host to host, like a pandemic outbreak, shockingly rapidly.

These days we have everything hypermanaged by algorithms that silo you into your own content niche... and this was an exceptional enough of an event that it broke containment.

Videos like ... this entire topic/event/story... used to be what the YouTube trending tab looked like.... just totally random shit that for whatever reason, a bunch of people organically shared with each other, back when the algos were much, much more primitive.

    ...

Anyway... extremely ironically, a whole lot of the viral nature of this is due to Thor being just such an astoundingly massive piece of shit liar and manipulator.

He has a whole entire history of being astoundingly cocky, arrogant, dishonest, deceptive, intellectually inconsistent, rhetorically manipulative, etc, and it is genuienly... just astounding, i dont know what other word to use, to go through every single shitty thing Thor has done or said, not only in regards to SKG, but many, many other things Thor has done.

Basically, Thor is now a lolcow, a perfect person to milk by making content criticizing him, because he really is that much of an unbelievable, outrageuous idiot asshole.

  • I mean, its not technically completely impossible, but the vast majority of EU countries require a valid name, id, address, etc, its usually a pretty dumb idea to bot spam an official government web portal, and I'm sure there will be a review process after July 31.

Also... its not like it hits a million and then just no one else can sign up to it anymore.

It'll stay open till the end of the month, could easily breach a million, maybe even two million if anything like this insane rate keeps up.
