  • New York state has a whole bunch of power over the city too. I think the city had real bad finances a long time ago and part of bailout by the state came with a whole bunch of power.

  • Concerns about Palantir’s work with UK police are growing, Liberty Investigates recently revealed how Palantir has established a “real-time data-sharing network” with some forces that includes sensitive personal details of vulnerable victims, children and witnesses alongside suspects.

Details of such systems are routinely kept from public view. In both 2024 and 2025, multiple FOI requests about Palantir’s police contracts —including from Liberty and the Good Law Project—were referred to the CRU, which advised forces to withhold information.

  • I saw an interview when they switched to 100 pennies to a pound. People were going on about how the old system was so much easier and made so much sense, and the new decimalized system was weird and didn't make sense. It sounded exactly like when people say imperial is easy and metric is hard.

  • The Glossers came to the U.S. just a few years before the fear and prejudice of the “America first” nativists of the day closed U.S. borders to Jewish refugees. Had Wolf-Leib waited, his family likely would have been murdered by the Nazis along with all but seven of the 2,000 Jews who remained in Antopol. I would encourage Stephen to ask himself if the chanting, torch-bearing Nazis of Charlottesville, whose support his boss seems to court so cavalierly, do not envision a similar fate for him.

  • She arrived before the Iranian revolution. Going back after the revolution with a Western education means at the very least she would have been deemed very very very suspicious. And why would a new paranoid religious government take the risk at all? Easier to purge.

  • “The only thing wrong with her … was the color of her skin,” Velez’s mother, Margarita Flores, told CBS Los Angeles.

The incident comes as numerous US citizens have been swept up in the Trump administration’s crackdown on immigrants. People have reported they are being targeted for their skin color and for attempting to aid immigrants being detained by immigration agents.

  • Kashanian came to the United States in 1978 on a student visa and eventually applied for asylum, but her claim was denied. Federal officials granted her a reprieve to stay in the country provided she follow the law and appear at regular immigration appointments. Family members say Kashanian never missed one of those appointments and has never been accused of a crime.

  • Some observers say this is an easy way for Pyongyang to earn money. While foreign tourists are allowed in, tour groups largely tend to come from China and Russia, countries with whom Pyongyang has long maintained friendly relations.
