  • Is it accurate to call him a former billionaire? My understanding is that he essentially embezzled ~$50 billion investor money and never truly owned it himself. Didn't he take a ~$1 billion "loan" from the company for example?

I think it's more accurate to say "he had signature authority over accounts with billions in them" not "he was a billionaire" but idk..

  • Yeah I admit I'm very torn about this. On the one hand this idiot kid managed to blast through 50 fucking BILLION dollars of other peoples' money and shows zero remorse. On the other hand, I'm wondering what the ethical responsibility of the state is for accommodating prisoners' dietary needs from medical conditions, religious observation, and ethical/personal preferences eg vegetarian/veganism etc. I don't like punishing people beyond what the court orders, and it is really disturbing when people cheer and joke about things like prison rape.

Seems to me it shouldn't be too difficult to make a vegan "meatloaf" type food that checks all the boxes. Sort of like ordering the Kosher meal on an airplane. It's not gonna be great but it'll get you there.

  • This picture makes me irrationally angry. You do you, but if I'm gonna travel far from home to explore the ancient ruins of a long gone civilization, I'm not gonna bring a fucking gameboy or whatever that is to play some goddamn pokemon. Seriously, wtf, and PS, when did I turn into Calvin's dad?

  • ? Housing is an asset class like any other and grows over time. What has 2008 got to do with anything? A quick google search shows historic growth rates around 5% a year.

YoY growth data is updated quarterly, available from Mar 1992 to Dec 2022, with an average growth rate of 5.4%

That's a double time of about 12-13 years so roughly 3 doubling since 1992. That's an 8x multiplier so yeah, that's how a $100k house turns into an $800k house without a housing bubble to inflate prices even more. Just normal market forces.

That what were you saying about 2008 and why did you downvote me for it? Lol

  • It bugs me when people call any stupid little picture or comic a meme. It also bugs me when people say they are making a meme. One does not simply "make" a meme. It must become a meme on its own. Now if you'll excuse me I've got some clouds to yell at.

  • I saw mark Hamill perform in a play once called Six dance lessons in six weeks. Rue Mclanahan from the Golden Girls played the female lead. This was like 20+ years ago now I guess.

It was actually a really good play and I got to meet him during the opening night party afterwards. I was an idiot kid and asked him to sign the playbill with a MTFBWY or something dumb like that. He was visibly miffed, understandably, but still politely signed it "forcefully yours."

It wasn't until years later that I realized it was kind of rude of me to ask for that at the opening night party of a play he just worked really hard on. Must be real annoying having fanboys pestering you about a shitty movie you did decades ago. Anyway he seemed nice enough and it was a really good play. I got a pic with him around here somewhere, maybe I'll post if there's any interest.

  • In the early days of the pandemic I was thinking the shift to working from home would cause people to flee cities and move to smaller towns, causing major demographic and social changes.

I was half right. People did move to smaller towns, myself included. But then we saw firsthand how awful they are and moved back to big cities because it's worth it. I could go the rest of my life not living next to mouth breathing MAGAs.

Not sure if we can rely on smaller towns to moderate our prices..

  • I've got my ears tuned listening for a shoe shine boy telling people to go buy rental properties, markets to plummet immediately after.

Remember that great scene in The Big Short talking to the stripper in Florida who owned four condos two houses and a boat, something like that.

  • I mean we are seeing the results right now of decades of exponential growth. Take a house that costs $100,000 and increase prices from 3-10% per year every year for ten twenty forty years whatever and boom, same house now costs a million bucks. It's not surprising to me at all. Idk how to fix it but it's not surprising.

  • I use small pillows, sort of like the end pillow on a sofa, about the size of a shoebox maybe. It's all the support I really need and it's small enough to be able to shift it around easily into whatever shape or position you need. Give that a shot.

  • Have you read the book? It's a textbook with a plot. Every time I open it my jaws on the floor within seconds. Super technical and I learn something new every time. It's the kind of book you can open at literally any page and just start reading.

  • I agree there's no room in the films for Glorfindel but it's still a shame. Also they were such a sausage fest even with Liv Tyler lol, no argument from me.

Hey, trivia, when Arwen was riding Frodo to Rivendell in flight to the ford she coaxes her horse to ride faster. Noro lim Asfolath, noro lim!

Asfolath is actually the name of Glorfindel's horse so there's that 🙃

  • It wasn't my favorite and I'm not sure what point they were trying to make. But Cloud Atlas was different and ambitious and for that I appreciated it. I saw it when it came out more than 10 years ago and I still think of it occasionally, so there's that.

  • I've been watching a lot of classics lately and I've never actually seen Lawrence of Arabia. It's kind of intimidating at almost four hours and those older movies are often a slog. Obviously you're gonna say yes because it's one of your favorites, but do you think I should check it out?

  • Snatch is definitely up there! Seen it a million times and can quote just about all of it, plus the soundtrack is outstanding!

Pro tip: watch with the subtitles on, you'll catch a ton of detail you missed.
