  • A buddy of mine has a foldable Samsung and likes it. IDK what model but it's big, looks like a full sized phone when folded, and opens out into something with 2x the screen space of a normal phone, basically a mini tablet.

I had a number of flip phones in the old days and they all broke at the hinge. So there's that.

  • Android was initially developed by some other company, that Google acquired when it decided it wanted to do smartphones. The alternate universe that I see is they pick a different company instead, and things play out about like before. Maemo (Nokia product) unfortunately died before its time, but maybe it could have been where Android is now. PalmOS and maybe others also might have been viable. Dunno about the Blackberry OS. Windows Mobile (spawn of Windows CE, I think) always stunk.

Wyden released a letter from the NRA, dated Tuesday, in which the gun rights group reported receiving $2,512.85 in contributions and membership dues “from people associated with Russian addresses” or known Russian nationals living in the United States from 2015 to the present.

Looks like NRA improperly funded some of its executives' personal business travel to Russia where they were hoping to make $$$ deals.

I hadn't heard about any of this before, but meh.

  • Police in Petaluma City, California, have arrested 54-year-old Josh Garzoli for allegedly threatening to “execute” a school district official if they didn’t remove rainbow Pride flags flying at local schools. The threats come as conservatives increasingly seek to ban Pride flags from schools as a “divisive” form of “ideological” messaging.

  • I have a small self-hosted Nextcloud with Nextcloud Chat and it can do video though it isn't great. Jitsi Meet is much better but I haven't tried to host it myself. I'm sure there are other options too, though idk what to suggest. Maybe see what's around on Scriptaculous these days?

  • The software part is easy. The hassles are more in dealing with abuse, ddos attacks, inappropriate content, etc. Hosting can also get expensive if usage gets high enough. But, things like this have been done plenty of times and there is lots of such software already available.

  • I mostly just look at the communities I subscribe to, so I don't get exposed to much political spew these days. I'll only occasionally look at the "all" feed and maybe add a few new subscriptions plus see a bunch of uninteresting or annoying stuff that I ignore.

On .world, the most amusing thing is the amount of pr0n (from lemmynsfw.com) on the front page. I'm not anti-pr0n as such, but jeez, what is that doing there.
