  • This story is fucking wild. They cancelled the visa and then immediately arrested them. Not deported, not even given time to buy a ticket out of the country. Just declared illegal and put in prison for something a relative did.

  • Do flights from Thailand to Mumbai not have x-ray screenings for baggage, or is this a very weird bribery situation? I know some places only have metal detectors for people, but I have not seen any airport which doesn't scan baggage.

  • Reddit is trash, but gen Z was a mistake

  • Jokes on you, my power meter is in the crank arm.

  • Doing longer extractions (12hr+) with room temperature water makes very smooth coffee with much less bitterness and significantly higher caffeine content. It's also less fussy - set it up in the evening and have great coffee in the morning.

  • Sometimes it helps to remember that a lot of people are actually hopelessly stupid. And this isn't like some elitist ivory tower commentary - there is a good percentage of the population which struggles with basic problem solving, knowledge synthesis, critical thought, etc.

"Advanced capitalism" is sometimes literally called a "knowledge economy" and this has really properly fucked people who could have previously earned a fine living doing mindless physical work. And again, this isn't like some normative statement - for most of human history this equation has been inverted, and intellectual opportunities were scarce. Honestly, part of the problem is probably very specifically that we have hit that inflection point, which is cultivating a new form of alienation for those who are on that lower cognitive tail, who both lack opportunities and are also made to feel inferior for it.

  • Capitalism probably doesn't help, but I don't think male alienation is really unique to this time or culture. Any time you have social hierarchy the lowest tier ends up eating a lot of shit. Our social hierarchy is very capitalist but you'd easily find the same kind of thing even in hunter gatherer societies. Socialism has plenty of hierarchy baked in as well. Anarchists are about the only ones who actively attempt to "flatten" society.

  • Hey thanks friend. Honestly we don't deserve dogs, and I definitely didn't deserve him but I'm really glad we got to spend our time together. im going to go cut an onion now.

  • Yeah it's all good. I appreciate the check in. I am remarried and am like pretty important in my field. That's what I'm trying to say here - make a good life and this shit seems trivial. Don't make someone else into a foundation of your ego. This isn't some manoshpere shit, just acknowledging that adversity is optional growth.

I am way more upset about my dog who died ten months ago than anything involving my ex wife. If anything I'd like to take a moment to bring his life into our collective experience and spend a moment appreciating how much of a good boy he was until the very end.

  • You can apply for asylum in an embassy and receive travel documents if approved. Either Russia or Ecuador could also have just put him on a diplomatic flight. Edward Snowden is not the first person who needed to cross hostile borders to claim asylum. The simple fact of the matter is that he either chose not to do so, or was not allowed to do so.

  • Because real life isn't a movie filled with people standing by to assist the main character in the third act. People are generally shit, and you are the only person who actually cares about you. It sucks to learn this particular lesson in such a brutal way, but it's an important lesson nonetheless. Move on and make this a footnote in your success story.

Signed, another person with your exact same experience.

  • She's already a multimillionaire and one of the hottest actresses in the world right now. Trust me, I'm usually more than happy to dunk on incels, but this is kind of manipulative.

  • You don't need a passport to claim asylum. The whole story reeks tbh. He stayed in Russia because he wasn't allowed to leave. Or because he was a Russian agent. But there are many diplomatic avenues to get from one sympathetic country to another for a legitimate asylum claim.
