  • Iraq was absolutely fucked, but what Russia is doing in Ukraine is open genocide. Their media and politicians constantly talk about eliminating Ukrainian identity. The US media and politicians constantly talked about bringing democracy to Iraq (which it still kind of has).

The situations are comparable, but they are very different. An honest commentator would acknowledge the horrors of both if pressed, while also being able to qualify and separate that horror.

  • This is literally how it is. There is no paperwork to fill out, you just show the man in Amsterdam your passport, he asks if you are here for work or pleasure, and then you wink at him and say "plaisir monsieur" and then he rolls his eyes and gives you a stamp which is good for 3 months.

  • This is exactly why this shit is stupid. Basic private key infrastructure will never have the backdoors they believe they need. Nor should it. The principles and algorithms are simply too well known, and there are far too many code examples to truly put this cat back in the bag. All this does is make the average person less secure while doing nothing to actual spies, terrorists or organized criminals.

  • God I am just legitimately bored with all of history being viewed through this particular Marxist lens. France and the US heavily influenced Marx's revolution framework, not the other way around. You can make a pretty strong argument that Marx's fundamental ignorance and misunderstanding of these events significantly influenced his fundamentally broken revolutionary model, which has very obviously held back his largely sound economic theory.

Yes, the cold war interventionalism by the US was very often bad. Geopolitical forces in the new nuclear era must have been pretty nuts, but I'm not going to defend most things done in the name of liberal democracy which forces autocracy onto others. To be honest, as a democratic socialist, I happen feel the same way about socialism as well. You will never free people by creating a dictatorship, be it of the proletariat or otherwise.

  • Yeah, a lot of people still haven't gotten this yet. Spez wants reddit to be friendly to stupid people who do stupid things like buy Trump NFCs. This entire thing is about purging the old, tech savvy, liberal/left crowd to make room for Facebook NPCs who are easier to monetize.

  • Oh God have you met people? When people talk about their tweeting, the neurochemical feedback mechanism is "oh wow you tweet?" It's filled with positive cultural context.

If that response becomes "wtf is twxing?" that entire zeitgeist just collapses and people will view the service with active repulsion. Like a toy they've grown their identity out of. Or a cringe dress they wore to their sibling's wedding.

  • At this point I am pretty convinced he's doing it on purpose. I don't quite understand why, except maybe as a weird flex. Or maybe the world's billionaires got together and decided to kill Twitter because they hate all the negative press? IDK, but the whole thing is just too surreal.

  • Me, taking three busses to the city hall meeting, getting there early so I can get my name on the list, and then waiting for three more hours until my name is called:

"LADIES AND GENTLEMEN, I WOULD LIKE TO TAKE THIS OPPORTUNITY TO ANNOUNCE THAT I AM VERY HETEROSEXUAL."

  • I don't know what is worse - the fact that this kind of logic flew for centuries, or the fact that these people still don't realize that yelling "I AM DEFINITELY NOT GAY YOU CAN TELL BY HOW SERIOUS I TAKE THESE MATTERS" is honestly a pretty terrible way of convincing people you aren't gay.
