  • The out of date problem you mention is something Nix contemplates. As of a couple hours ago, if you try to install Etcher (Balena Etcher, that is), you will get a message saying there's an out of date dependency: Electron.

You can still try to install End of Life packages, but you have to type an instruction the 'compiler' tells you to type out. In other words, you have to be deliberate about installing out of date dependencies.

The other problem I understood it as "if I declaratively do this and then imperatively do that, how do I keep track of it all?". If that is indeed what you're asking, you're right. That's a problem. That's why I try to keep everything in the config.

I've been using Nix now for a couple of months and the configuration file has been a great friend. Sometimes I don't know how to configure something and I get lost and worried, but the community has helped me to fix my problems- .

  • Funnilly enough, you had a similar experience to mine. I was rewatching the movies recently and I felt uncomfortable with the whole black and white and races stuff.

I commented it to my boyfriend. I thought it'd be funny to laud Sauron's technical and logistical prowess. I then made a bet: I could find Sauron fans online. Someone must have disliked the black and white part and must have made an argument in favor of Sauron.

I didn't have to search long to find the reinterpretation I posted here.

  • Thanks for the recommendation. I didn't know such little reduction in quality meant so much savings with JPGs and PNGs!

Yeah. Avif gave me some nasty artifacts on some pictures that I wanted to save long term. Not using it anytime soon… or at least until those issues are fixed.

Why do you dislike WebP? I can see that it isn't widely used, so if longevity is my goal JPGs and PNGs are a better bet. But am I missing something about WebP?

  • Seeing this post again made me think, apart from my previous reply, about something else.

I think your "popularity of software" argument is great because it probably holds true, in that an investment in finding an exploit has larger returns if the exploitable software is widely used. But rather than thinking in terms of apps, we could think in terms of operating systems. What if the vector of infection is not an app and rather is an OS? This is perfectly possible and there are massive incentives to find such exploits since this is not app-dependent.

This means that merely using iOS or Android in any capacity (either through Lineage OS or perhaps even Replicant) could be enough for infection. And so far, not knowing what the vectors of infection are for Pegasus, this is perfectly possible.

Perhaps using Linux OS is a good idea, given it's not as popular.
