  • It's fine just go ahead and ban me because I won't edit anything. I provided two articles about captives and their experience having been held hostage by Hamas, they list multiple instances. I have no time for bs like this.

  • Just because there are problems with the NYT does not mean this particular story is not credible. This woman is simply sharing her experinece. What evidence do you have to refute the claims of a rape victim? Should she not be taken as seriously as any other rape victim? Just because Israel can take advantage of such a story to justify genocide does not mean we can discredit the story without being intellectually dishonest.

  • Thanks for pointing that out. No denying this. Is this about Amit Soussanna? Would be curious to see a timeline for that. But also as a rape victim myself, it took me years to finally come out and tell my parents what had happened. It's possible that she is lying, but also possible that she is saying he truth. It doesn't say anything politically about Hamas or Palestinians... it's just a thing that is likely to have happened.

The thing is, it would also be naive to assume that no sexual assault or abuse happeend. Even Hezbollah (a much more disciplined army) will have cases like that.

  • I never denied that and nothing I said points to anything against that. Some Hamas fighters still raped and abused some captives. This is reality. These people also have the right to have their story heard because it's just one part of the truth.

  • Before I do that can I say this?

I guess what you mean to ask is: was this part of the NYT report or not? Is that right?

And also, I agree that much of that report was BS, but is that enough to discredit every single story in it? You may pretty well be denying rapes that did take place. I have no reason to deny the testimonies of some of these women. Hamas fighters are not angels and it would be quite naive to assume that no rape happened. What I said does not suggest that Hamas carries out systematic rape. Maybe that is a claim more worth your time to moderate than "some victims came out and spoke out about sexual assault during captivity."

But if this is how things roll in this community then just ban me 😉

  • I think there probably were some? Pretty sure some released hostages described abuse and sexual assault.

I hate Hamas, as a Palestinian, but Hamas fighters are not demons... they are not angels either.

  • Keep in mind it's always possible that they do this partly for PR. But at least they were transparent, even if they did in to look good. After all, next to Israel, anyone would look good.

  • That's why women live 10 years longer on average. God made it saw. Man dies, woman raises grandkids then dies. /s

  • Pretty sure he was having narcissistic meltdowns before he hit the age of 4.

  • Onset of decline sounds good but how were these studies able to tell where it starts if they were not adequate at testing it (because your claim is we cannot test it so easily so we should rely on the mean age provided by studies that test it... sounds like going in a circle to me)?

So why not have cognitive tests and a committee of experts. It's the President we are talking about. Surely science can whip something up other than "70 BBAAAAAD, 50 OKAAAY". You could be 35 with mental illnesses that affect your job. You could be 50 and a heavy drinker. Why stop at the age limit if we can disqualify unqualified candidates elsehow? Why use the "safer" dumbass cutoff limit when we can use the "more fair" approach of testing people individually? Why not use the cutoff limit to say "during these years, we test the President even more on cognition"?

But yeah I agree, nothing works if people won't implement it. And whose fault is that?

  • I replied to someone else about the same thing. Remove it and replace it with cognitive tests.

  • I think those should also be removed. I think being a suitable candidate for presidency means being cognitively fit and have good campaigning and debates. At this 70 or 80 cutoff we lose people like Bernie and I'm sure we are losing out on a lot of potentially good candidates younger than 35.

  • I never said age doesn't matter. All I said is that some effects that come with aging are problematic and since all people age differently, they should be judged on their own basis. We have tests for cognitive decline... no need to use stupid methods like picking an age and drawing a line.

  • The agists did.

Ps. I am extremely sad to see left leaning progressives go all bananas about sexism and racism but just embracing ageism as if that is somehow acceptbale.

Saying that age is an indicator of cognitive decline is not ageist. Saying things like "this person is TOO OLD and TOO FARTY to be president" is. This is what my problem here is with.

Saying a President cannot be above 80 is like saying women should not be firefighters (or some other similar sexist nonsense). Neither people can control their age or gender, but they sure as fuck can prove themselves as competent in a certain field and this is what we should be judging.

We're not in the fucking bronze age. No need to draw lines in sand and say "80 BAAAAD". PLEASE. Let's just be a tadfuck more sophisticated than that. Millions of years of evolution, we can be a fair fucking society can't we?

  • I can't see how one can set any kind of hard line when it's clear that exceptions are plently. We have better healthcare and will love longer. Better get used to this.

  • Admit? People get weird when they age? Any studies to back this up at all? I live in Sweden where a large portion of the population is quite old. You have those who need care, and you have those who are just fine (like anyone in any age group). I'm surprised to see this kind of agesim BS on Lemmy tbh. Are we really stupid enough to judge the competence of a person based on how many times we rotated the sun? Please. There is plenty to hate about Trump. The passing of time is not one of them.

P.S: I think your attitude sucks and I hope that when/if you hit 80, you have people around you that don't have this attitude so they don't bin you into early grave my metaphorically killing you before you are dead.
