  • I agree with your sentiment, however I don't think Reddit is a sinking ship. It sucks, me and many other people are angry with them, some of us left but it's not nearly enough to make them actually sink. Reddit is too recognizable a brand.
    They're too big to fail.

  • Well, it's basically an extension to your insta account. So I imagine when you sign up, it sends requests to others you know to make it seem like everybody uses it.

  • That already happened. For example, we have mozilla !firefox@fedia.io

edit: I think it's a mistake to throw mozilla into in the same bag with the other corpos. The whole truth is a bit more complicated than makes money = bad. In this case I'm happy to take the L

  • I do over all agree with you. Not sure about the non-profit, though. That seems like something for later when the dust settles.
However, as we all know - power corrupts.
Some form of governing body(ies) is probably necessary to keep the lemmyverse from falling apart by forces inside and outside. Right now the fediverse seems to be pretty much free-for-all. If there was to be a governing structure, it would need a lot of thought and careful consideration in regards to its shape, size and strength.
It is actually exciting to see and participate in how things develop.

  • That's a very sensational title for what the article actually is.

  • Honestly, I personally have zero tolerance for this. I'd block Home Depot and every other company too. Some people enjoy Wendy's sassy tweets but it's still marketing. It's still only there to drill the brand into your mind.
Social networks are for people to socialize, that's why they exist. We're just conditioned to expect the financial incentive in everything. As if people wouldn't make anything otherwise. People make cool stuff all the time and just put it up on the internet for everybody. Because it's cool and because it may be useful to others. People write games and software and draw art and compose music and websites and edit wiki, not even expecting any (or minimal) profit from doing it. Because it others will find it useful and/or enjoyable. People are fundamentally kind and compassionate if they're not pitted against each other in the name of profit. Lemmy and Mastodon are deliberately made to not be profitable. It's a safe haven from all the corporate nonsense everywhere online and offline.

  • Good decision to have people heard. I'm genuinely curious about why somebody would want to side with Meta on this.

  • Oh.. great.. There's one very lukewarm comment the admin made yesterday, but I x-posted the article to the local meta channel with hope they'll make a clear stance on the situation.

  • There is this lukewarm comment @sunaurus made yesterday but I would very much appreciate a definitive stance on the topic, please. I do believe that having Meta here poses a real threat to the future of fediverse. It may not be the case right now but considering the company's history, I think it's very safe to assume only the worst. As explained in the article linked above.

  • People left reddit because of corporate f*ckery, and some of them are now making excuses for meta?? What kind of mental gymnastics is this?

  • Very good! I sincerely hope all the others will too. If lemm.ee won't, I know where I'll be moving to ;)

  • You can use imgur and paste a link to the high quality image, or fiddle with it a little to fit the limit. 100kb is fine for web use, imo. Crop, resize, convert to something like webp format.. Instances are run by individuals, a server in someone's bedroom. Not exactly a company with $15+ billion evaluation (dec2021) like reddit. It's far from perfect, obviously. But it's much better than I expected at first.
