  • This is basically where I land as well. I can enjoy an instant coffee just fine, and I don't need every coffee I have to be the best coffee. I've got plenty of options for when I want to put a bit more effort in and get a better result

That said I do think there are better instant brands than Nestle at similar prices. I like the Douwe Egberts one more and it goes on sale often enough for me to get a jar before the prior one runs out

  • "Yellow peril" is a term describing a kind of racist propaganda that solidified in the 19th century, basically saying that either East Asia or specific parts of East Asia (China or Japan, most often) represents an existential threat to Europe / the West / white people / whatever else. Wikipedia has a page on it, though it sticks to the historical context and leaves more recent versions of the same general idea to other articles. That's not to say that you were doing it, though, just that it is an established term

  • lol, apparently I got a temp ban for "misinformation" over a comment saying that Russian-aligned forces at Debaltseve ignored the ceasefire that was agreed in Minsk II

In fairness though it was only a temp ban, and they've never removed anything else I've said (even in that specific thread)

  • They did for a long time, having him gradually come around and begin to redeem himself, and then made an incredibly confusing decision to have him suddenly revert to his old ways right at the very end with no warning whatsoever

  • This is not a good argument against nuclear power. The Chernobyl exclusion zone is actually doing incredibly well on biodiversity metrics specifically because humans don't go there at all. The real issues with nuclear power are how long it takes to set up, sourcing the fuel, and the fact that while containing the waste is not really that big a problem it is one that faces enormous political hurdles in many places

  • To be honest I'd be surprised if this was Russia. It's certainly not outside of Russia's capabilities, but at the end of the day they're just cables. Plenty of the Red Sea is right next to Houthi-controlled territory and not all that deep. Something like this is commercially available and easily capable of reaching the floor of the area near the Bab el-Mandeb that any cables from Europe to East Asia have to go through

  • I think part of the problem is the swinging temperatures as much as the actual cold. There are several different classifications of dzud, and the "iron dzud" in which heavy snowfall melts and then refreezes into a solid layer of ice seems to be what the article is describing. Obviously temperatures anywhere near -50 C are brutally cold regardless, but if everything is covered in a layer of ice then it doesn't even matter if the animals can keep warm because there's nothing they can get at to eat.

  • That America is perfectly capable of imperialism without supporting Ukraine or even maintaining NATO. It has an enormous military and extremely safe geography. It can afford to pick and choose its friends, and a pivot towards Russia instead of central and western Europe is not going to change any of those prior factors. Russia is not anti-imperialist just because it's doing stuff that NATO doesn't like.

  • When did I say anything that your middle two paragraphs are about? It's like you've gone off on a rant against someone else and just decided to post it here anyway

Of course the GOP is generally keen on war. The reality is that they're blocking America from arming Ukraine right now. Whether it's an electoral strategy or a preference for Russia over Ukraine or anything else, that's what is happening.
