  • What's the associated system instruction set to? If you're using the API it won't give you the standard Google Gemini Assistant system instructions, and LLMs are prone to go off the rails very quickly if not given proper instructions up front since they're essentially just "predict the next word" functions at heart.

  • What's frustrating to me is there's a lot of people who fervently believe that their favourite model is able to think and reason like a sentient being, and whenever something like this comes up it just gets handwaved away with things like "wrong model", "bad prompting", "just wait for the next version", "poisoned data", etc etc...

  • There's a certain amount of discourse in KotH fandom around exactly how all four childhood friends came to buy houses on The Alley behind Rainey Street. Apparently the canon is hazy and inconsistent, though I can't remember the details.

  • I don't know anything about New Zealand, or Maori culture, or history, or parliamentary procedure, or the Treaty Principles Bill, or the hearings that led to this decision, or the Haka, or sociology, or anthropology, or race relations, or indigenous issues, but I think...

why don't they just have everyone do their hakas at the start, like in the rugby?

  • What pisses me off most is that the way the internet works now is that ten years ago, someone who wanted to share about how to service your 90s Volvo that would have written it on a web page with a few photos that would have been quicker, cheaper and easier to write, quicker and easier to read, and cost next to nothing to host.

But because Google control fucking everything, that same person is now heavily incentivized to make it a pointlessly long video instead, that took days to make and edit, and is harder to use while working, and if they don't do that then they ain't getting anywhere near the top of the search results and you weren't going to find it anyway.

It sucks and I can't wait for people to wake up and tell Google to fuck off and stop ruining the internet.

  • They'll do anything to save themselves except for stop being evil.

Sometimes I wonder if those second-tier execs are even more culpable than the CEOs. Like, we expect CEOs to be psychopaths. But those second-tier guys that got a seat further down the table, off the back of a good degree and a few decades of hard work? They know what they're doing is wrong but choose to go along with it anyway because they're just following orders.

  • I think OP's meme illustrates Feynman's point very well; there comes a stage where if the number of incorrect statements in your explanation outnumber the the correct ones, it's no longer a meaningful explanation.

  • Yeah, some of the bandwagonny replies I'm seeing in this thread do not make their posters sound like someone you'd want to spend your working life sat next to.

You don't have to show interest in the company to help the CEO get richer, but you should probably show an interest in the company because it's where you're going to be spending 1/3rd of your entire waking hours from now on, and you're going to have a fucking miserable time of it if you've already decided to mentally check out before you've even got to the interview. Have some self-respect.

  • It's still up more than 20% above what it spent most of March and April at.

I want to find one of these people who just bought TSLA at $284 and ask them what possible basis do they have for thinking the company's earnings will grow by the 6,000% that it needs to in order to start returning anything like the industry average.

Tesla could achieve phenomenal unexpected growth and increase their market share by a factor of ten and they'd still have a massively unsustainable PE ratio.

  • It's a bit more nuanced. Trolling and ragebait absolutely was a thing, but there was still a certain sense that it was just part of the Wild West nature of the internet. Someone posting racist garbage on a phpBB would be a minor irritant that would catch a bit of flak but be otherwise ignored.

These days it's entire office blocks full of professional trolls armed with advanced analytics, profiling systems and AI paid to push political agendas. And the most frustrating part of it is that despite the fact that everyone knows this to be true, it's still working anyway and we have elected officials of ostensibly Developed countries repeating obvious bullshit they saw online.

  • The difference between not being keen on trans people and making a few shitposts versus actively devoting time and money towards oppressing them is HUGE.

This isn’t just someone with an alternative opinion we’re talking about. It’s someone using more wealth than a lot of us will never touch, to fuck over an already marginalised group. She’s pure fucking evil.
