  • While reading this I had a sudden flash of inspiration in which I saw clearly exactly how gravity works, but then when I started typing I forgot again. It's quite frustrating

  • Biden’s ongoing genocide

Israel were illegally seizing Palestinian land by force under 45. And Obama. And Bush. In fact pretty much as a matter of ongoing policy going back to 1948. Saying that it's still "Biden's ongoing genocide" isn't fair or reasonable when Trump is posting AI videos of himself and Netanyahu enjoying his new casino on the Gaza strip.

  • Yeah the irony of it all is that professionally subtitled shows were already inferior to fansubs, because the fansubbers were a self-selecting group of people who were fans of that show specifically. I guess Crunchyroll realized that their subs sucked anyway so why pay money for them?

  • I don’t know why it’s so difficult for these Ayn Rand readers to understand that almost no market is perfectly free, efficient, contestable or optimal. When it comes to licensing IP in particular, the overhead of trying to get permission for a show that’s already licensed by a competitor is an insurmountable barrier to entry for anyone who isn’t already a huge media conglomerate.

The only realistic alternative to shitty subtitles is piracy.

  • Oh yeah, I've posted it before now and it makes some people really angry. It seems to be a very common idea that third party voters are somehow worse than Trump voters, as though the Democratic Party somehow have a right to all non-fascist votes.

  • We're in the process of moving to Linux in our company, entirely because of how aggressively awful Windows 11 is. We'd have been perfectly happy staying on Windows 10 forever, but last week our head of development woke up to discover that Windows 10 had spontaneously chosen to "upgrade" itself during the night without him agreeing to it.

  • The distressing thing for me is knowing that a lot of my friends (and exes) are exactly the sort of people that'll just absent-mindedly click OK without reading it and share every single photo they've ever taken of me; photos which Facebook's facial recognition will easily tag.

  • It's a common American view that the other countries weren't spending "enough", whereas from the perspective of everyone else on the planet it's America that's spending a hugely disproportionate amount of wealth on killing, and just expecting its allies to do the same.

  • I wish they were just removing themselves from the world stage. What they're actually doing is shifting away from a model of direct co-operation with allied nations and strong economic ties with otherwise less friendly nations, to unilateral action wherever and whenever they feel like it.

Their foreign policy isn't moving towards isolationism, it's moving towards unchecked fascist domination.

  • Whenever I see anything like this I remember my days working for large American companies and how difficult it was, even as a senior engineer, to get spending approval for anything. Like, even a $20 replacement headset I had to keep resubmitting applications for for three weeks because the managers had a policy of rejecting every first request on the theory that if it was important enough to spend company money on, it was important enough to fill in the form twice.

The point being, these sorts of people do not hand out a single penny without running the numbers and realising that the cost of rigging an election multiplied by the probability of success, is still lower than what they'll financially gain from it going a certain way.
