the problem is not the comment or the joke but the news articles with low quality or obvious stories.

most "tech" journalism is, generally, garbage.

in this case, the fact that 1000 CSAM photos were found in a 5 billion photos database scrapped from the internet is not surprising in anyway. These photos, unfortunately, are spammed all over the internet.

removing these images from the open web has been a headache of webmasters and admins for years in sites which host user uploaded images.

if the millions of images in the training data were automatically scraped from the internet, I don't find it surprising that there was CSAM there.

My system is 7 years old, it wouldn't be an appropriate comparison. Maybe others can help

isn't the id unique? which means that sites can trace every visit you make and what videos you watch every time?

between Mastodon instances it's quite easy and painless. everything else is kind of a mess.

I'd rather have some sort of public-private key system to permit for moving across instances and being able to associate accounts.

don't be irrealistic. most laptops in the Macbook price range will have 8 hours of usage in low consumption mode or around 6 or 5 if you need more power.

and at that price point they come with at least 32 GB of RAM which can be upgraded, swappable SSDs with more capacity than the macbook's, far better keyboard and more ports.

the Macbooks do have some extra performance per battery usage? yeah I guess. But after 2 years that the battery life is gone, you'll probably be buying the newer model or wishing that you bought a laptop with a replaceable battery.

You can see the blocklist of any mastodon instance without joining it. You can and should read their policies before joining.

You can have a single user instance of your own and be done with it. If you don't like someone else choosing what instances defederate, you have that possibility.

there has been people in pro-threads instances that have moved to one that blocks threads and the other way around.

I also advocate for smaller cars, but batteries are heavy as fuck. The same car just swapping the motor with a battery will be considerably heavier.

Yes, batteries charging times should be shorter and have a longer range, but they are already acceptable for daily usage.

What we need is to wait while old vehicles are being phased out so people replace them with electric cars. Most people aren't going to replace their perfectly working gasoline car with an electric just because it's greener.

Once there are more readily available cheap models and second hand ones, it'll probably be a smooth transition. I think it's reasonable to stop selling consumer gasoline cars in a decade.

What your arguments probe is that Apple had a better marketing team and brand recognition (due to iMac) than the manufacturers who were there before.

Yeah, Apple was financially successful, but not due to innovation. Just good marketing.

I don't know about the iPad things because I'm not interested in the tablet format in general.

But touchscreens were already a thing before the iPhone. Apple just took them, polished the UI a bit and used their already influential position with iMac and iPods to commercialise the product.

I wouldn't call that innovation, just having good brand recognition and a great marketing campaign.

not exactly. You can of course still get existing works by pirating them.

But if the Tolkien works entered the public domain, anyone could use them for any creative purposes freely. And yes, a lot of the new material would be trash. But some excellent works would appear to.

A good example of this is Lovecraft's works and the Cthulhu Mythos, that although not public domain until recent years, Lovecraft encouraged others to use his own creations on their own stories, thus expanding the literary universe of his own creation. Some stories are awful, but there has also been a ton of great works based on Lovecraft's creations that couldn't have existed otherwise.

I meant on Mastodon, where it is that simple. After all, it makes more sense since they are both microblogging.

In Lemmy it's a bit of a hassle, but the devs were working on it.
