  • Most of these comments are reddit levels of snarky and unhelpful, wow.

"How do I keep up my style?" Top comment: "I don't, and neither should you."

Great, thanks. Just because someone's hobby isn't tinkering with their Linux-variant for 5 hours a day doesn't mean it's worthless, especially to them. A lot more men are into fashion than Lemmy would have you believe, OP, don't get discouraged!

My advice is that if you have no clue where to start looking at "trends", I always recommend going to see what the big menswear fashion brands are doing in their seasonal collections and seeing if there's any outfits, silhouettes or pieces you're drawn to. Trying to find versions of those at your price point is the easiest way. And if you like things from a few seasons past, even better, because you'll definitely find them at thrift stores and 2nd hand resell sites like Poshmark/Depop/etc for a fraction of the price.

Also look for natural fabrics (cotton, silk, linen), not polyester. Tencel and Lenzing ecovero are good alternatives of you need the elasticity and smoothness certain polyester fabrics have but can't splurge on the higher cotton/silk quality. Polyester tends to trap smells, degrades quickly, and is basically recycled plastic clothing. Best to avoid.

  • Yay, I'm glad you like it there! It's definitely more slow moving than the rest of Lemmy, but I like their weekly community chats and stuff. Also a killer gardening community.

  • I'm not a legal expert, hence the "I think". That's just what I've been told from my educators, specifically at the federal level and the campaign finance laws around it. I'm more than happy to be corrected.

I know provinces choose to not run candidates in riding they believe are disadvantageous in order to give the other center-left candidates a chance. But provincial election laws are dictated by the provincial entities.

  • It seems like you're asking in good faith, so I'll be serious. I genuinely don't feel the "invisible hands of the mods" or what it is you're feeling in most of my online interactions. I don't even think about a 3rd party managing our conversations, and especially not on Lemmy of all places.

I say whatever I want to say, and let the upvotes/downvotes/likes/replies dictate whether my words were well or poorly received. If it was something that was unintentionally offensive, I'll apologize. If it was intentionally offensive, I'll eat the consequences of that (which is barely anything because it's the internet, who cares). That's it.

The worst censorship I've experienced was on Tiktok, when I told a 15 year old to "STFU bitch you can't even vote" and got muted for a week 😂 (unless my admin on Lemmy decides to ban me now because I'm currently jobless and chronically online using up too much bandwidth.)

  • And you are magnanimous for doing so. If someone came into my house and tried to dictate their rules to me, I'd be fuming.

This is why I'm not a mod 🤡

  • The culture of...having admins to maintain our servers? Dawg just make your own instance then, problem solved. Why is this even up for discussion? The whole point of the fediverse is you can set up your own server and connect with others under your own rules. If you want a mod-free space, you can literally make that.

If you believe in unmoderated spaces that much to argue about it, but aren't actually willing to make it yourself when it's simple enough to do so, you're just another social media agitator wasting time.

  • Holy shit, almost double the next person. Dude is in the twilight of his career, he could have told them to fuck off with little consequences at this point.

  • "Free speech is I get to say whatever I want, and you have to sit there and listen to me!!"

That's not free speech, that's a hostage situation.

  • Bro is talking smack to their own instance host 💀

  • Ngl, I am learning so much lemmy server id pol from you right now, lol

It's very interesting reading your experience (which I guess is the more common experience), and how even on this free and open platform there is still some sort of social grouping happening. I didn't really even factor that into my choice of server when I signed up, but now that I think about it, servers like slrpnk and the old 196 server (I'm completely blanking on the instance name) are built around special groups, obviously so. I guess I just don't think too deeply on the identities of the general instances because they claim to not have one (but they clearly do lol.)

Thanks for making the effort to explain all this, I appreciate it!

  • Communities shape how people think and act. Normalizing bootlicking for authoritarian regimes causes those who participate in those communities to feel and reproduce that normalization.

Sure, but only if they're solely in those echo chambers, which if they're posting in .world, they clearly aren't. And any ones who do are told off because of the content of their posts, not their home servers.

I see quite a few inflammatory posters from .world and .ee (especially of the American exceptionalism, anti-Palestine, and more recently anti-Canadian (🤭) varieties) but I don't automatically assume every single person on those servers hold those values. In fact, I think 9/10 comments I see you post specifically, PugJ, I agree with.

I had no idea about the Hexbear/lemmygrad lore though, I'll definitely keep that in mind going forward.

  • Oh I see what you're saying. I agree about the communities, but I was speaking more about the users from .ml getting blasted in communities outside .ml simply because they are from that instance (like in this thread).

If the users from there are participating in communities from outside that instance and following the rules, why does it matter if they're from .ml? They're not in the censored community, we're not in the censored community, who cares what the .ml admin are doing?

  • I think legally it might be collusion if they do that before forming government, so I don't actually think that'd ever happen. At most they would not run party candidates in strategic ridings, but that's also iffy. Again, keep an eye on that website, I think currently it's our best bet in staying informed about the vote splitting.

And I agree about FPTP. I still have a grudge against the Liberals for promising to abolish that in 2015 and then reneging on it.

  • No I know, but I'm not interacting with the admins of .ml, and I haven't really seen anything from the average .ml user that isn't your run of the mill leftist talking points I see all over Lemmy. They're not censoring or banning me from posting Winnie the Pooh, you know? Your experience may be different.

I have no idea what grad and hexbear are, I've never seen those instances and I'm assuming my admin already defederated from them. They're pretty reasonable in that regard.

Maybe I should learn Finnish in their honour...

  • They can say whatever they want to the press, I'm not getting my hopes up until we have an ABC government warming the seats of parliament during the throne speech. I'm a US-Can dual citizen so I've already faced one heartbreaking election. I'm not willing to let both my countries slip to fascists.

Plus, with the foreign interference probe + PP refusing to get security clearance, I don't doubt the Conservatives have some dirty tricks left in their bag.

  • You mean a coalition government?

Or you mean unifying on the ballot? Because I fundamentally disagree with that, I do not want a 2 party system like we have in the states.

Keep an eye on smartvoting.ca for information on vote splitting in your riding and how to prevent it. They already have it up and running for the Ontario election, with the Federal info coming soon (assuming as soon as the elections are announced).

  • God, I hope he is actually in trouble. I saw that Nanos still has Cons in a massive lead with them at 42, Libs at 26, and NDP at 17 (I'm assuming the other 15 are Bloc/Green). Praying that it's outdated data and that once the Libs have a new leader the gap will get closer.

I cannot imagine the state of Canada if we have PP and Trump at the same time.

  • They really are a community of nice people trying to protect their peace, as far as I've seen. They just defederated from instances with open registration due to influx of trolls, and a lot of users from those groups got offended over it. It was minor drama, but nothing offensive. It's a bit sad that they're still being vilified over it.
