  • well, it's not that they removed anything, it's that the company google paid to create the holiday events told google how much it was costing to include every substrata of celebration (i.e. national bean day, national micronesia first peoples remembrance), so google said, you know what, we're just going to have federal holidays on our calendar and people can add the rest as they like. which i think is fair enough.

  • A MILLION fucking Americans died, bad, chocking on their own fluids, unable to see or touch their loved one's as they passed, due to a mismanaged, purposefully inept Federal Global Pandemic response the last time Donald Trump was President, the outsized percentage were MAGA voters, their loved ones just put Donald Trump back in the White House, Democrats couldn't be bothered to vote in large enough numbers to counter them even having lost an almost equal amount of Mothers, Fathers, Sister, Brothers, Uncles, Aunts, Cousins, Friends, Coworkers to Trump direct scientific and medical ineptitude. I don't have to guarantee you anything about the "average american joe", they proved it on their own on November 6th.

  • It's only too bad that was the last safe, free and fair election we're ever going to get. Also, I think you overestimate the general populace's concern with biomedical research (though ever little bit could've helped overcome the 2.3% Trump won the whole thing with)

  • "Our biggest trade partners are japan and china.

We measure trade income from the us in hundred millions, sure. But we measure trade from asia in the billions"

lol no, Not if you live in Australia In 2023, the United States was our third-largest two-way trading partner in goods and services, worth $98.7 billion. Australia's goods and services exports to the United States were $33.6 billion. Australia's total imports from the United States were $65.1 billion. but this is why morons think it's no big deal just "cut of the US from Global trade"

  • the law does not exist if there is no mechanism to enforce it, literally not worth the paper it's printed on, it no longer becomes a law, just some words written on a page with a signature on it

  • No cop. No crime. (I have some really bad news on the fate of the entire American Experiment the first time Trump ignores a direct court order and the Executive Branch is found in contempt of the Legislative Branch)

  • yes, because it had the united states to fall back on, and russia only controlled 3% of their trade centered almost solely in energy and luxury goods

  • Trump is bluffing, of course (then again, who know's since he's deranged and flies off on tangents and could very easily at any time order the 5th fleet to set anchor off the Eastern Med, you know, for giggles). Trump is trying to pressure Arab countries to prepare themselves since Israel is going to root out Hamas and end them in Gaza, house to house.

  • Sounds really bad for Africa, especially South Africa where the HIV/AIDS rate per capita is the worst in the world. South Africa has said USAID only makes up 17% (which if true is in itself an enormous amount for one sovereign nation to depend on others, much less one single source) of it's health and human services, yet, almost every HIV clinic in the country has shut down since funding stopped, which begs the question, just how much of South Africa's entire HIV/AIDS budget was being paid for by USAID.

  • I mean it's definitely a gambit, all except for those hundreds of millions (billions?) of people who are going to lose their livelihoods around the world, when world trade shrinks by 20% to 50%. I mean, if you think inflicting that much damage on yourselves for "freedom" from American trade is worth the pain of continuing, have at it by all mean, but I don't think any government anywhere wants to take that hit to their economy, quite yet. You can try to wean your US trade in increments over time, but the US (under Fascists like Trump) will notice it, and start tarriffing what is still traded to made up for the difference. The US is a whole continent economy of 342 million, California alone has a GDP greater than all but 5 entire nations. It's all fucked under worldenders like Trump, and if he's not stopped is going to lead to a World Economic Depression worse than any war that has ever been waged.

  • they were not removed, they were paused for 30 days, let's check back in 3 weeks, eh?

  • same. welcome to the party, pal

  • people using musk to mock the holocaust, excellent

  • yes, and that was a planned phaseout, and not some insane abrupt change of an entire nations pricing structure. it gave companies time to adjust their sales and marketing techniques. many companies in the united states employ the .99 tactic to make their goods seem cheaper than they are, without the legal ability to round, they'll have to forego the psychological tool and make their products .00, or lose .04 a sale and make their products .95, this is going to screw them right up the keister, like immediately, and I am very much looking foward to watching the fallout from this when the big corps start losing their minds

  • ok, but realize what that's going to cost in the near term, and it's going to be more painful than any war you've ever fought, any fire you've ever put out, and any economic downturn your country has ever experienced, up front, and i don't believe most modern economies want to shoot themselves in the head quite yet, they'll have to endure humilating trade concessions which will shrink their economies gradually, but they're not gonna want to pull that rip cord just because they're a bit miffed

  • there was absolutely no planning any country can do to survive an insane trade war with the united states. nothing. there's no other trading partners that can take the exports in the volume every country trades with the US, without taking devastating hits to their own economies, which would see recession and depressions on a scale never experienced before in the modern world.
