  • I don't know that this is a bad thing, firstly the people themselves have richer intellectual lives because of it. Society is similarly enriched by extension and the country has a reserve pool of highly educated people it can draw upon as needed. There are only so many academic jobs available at any time but providing for and allowing everyone access to higher education is utopian and to be commended. It shows good planning for an ever more technical world.

  • I honestly don't feel so bad about any of it, working people maniacally voted for policies so obviously against their own interests that had almost no disguise. It was not done to them, they did it to themselves. I sat and watched them do it to themselves and now they have it coming.

  • It is not anything different, just organic evolutionary adaptation to environmental change. It appears to loop due to the differences in the way the scientists and the bacteria perceive time and the interval of the experiment.

  • I think the scariest line in the whole of it is Trump observing, 'In the first term, everybody was fighting me. In this term, everybody wants to be my friend'. It shows the societal slip, or at least the increase of unabashed openness in corporate and individual action towards cold gain and away from mock goals of perceived public good.

  • The utopia would spread across the entire globe filling every space humanity chose to live, like pouring proprietary cake mix into a fun shaped cake tin made with universal uniqueness to show your love, so a single Kevin would be overworked. He would need to be scaled up as the revolution proceeded. Even Lenin understood this, its why he had that kid with Yoko.

  • We could call that sport the Games for Hunger or something like that and the men could all be running. Also we would need populations of Kevins, perhaps decanted for the purpose because what people really miss in a utopia is the bullying. Not full-on to the death school type bullying, we are all too refined now for that and understand everyone is a sensitive frozen water crystal and any slightly offended sensibility is mortal injury to us all, and just very disappointing. No, what we crave is the no chinned, anonymous and slightly sarcastic bullying of a fully mature mind. Laughing at the opinions of others from our hide shacks and downvoting them in wank-gangs until they yield and go outside, in the air - the true defeat of the internetian. I have forgot the point I was trying to make so I'll stop, but I think the key idea is to reply 'sorry lady but' to any post you know is written by a boy adult.

  • It has already been said but I think the author misunderstood alchemists, the idea was only they would have the knowledge. The argument put forward would apply to the entire monetary system, money must be worthless if everyone can make it.

  • Because the people that innovate do not care for business and are not good at it, but everything in this world we created has to be sold so there is always this initial mismatch before the business graduate vultures, who innovate nothing descend on it, beg control and then go way too far in the opposite direction. At that late point the only innovation will be a slightly more rounded set of icons on the website.

  • So now we are actually to the point where we can ask if a corporation or more widely anything at all has any value if it makes no profit.

There are people in the world who by luck of birth or circumstance have amassed obscene wealth and they after the fact are trying to convince everyone that profit is the only thing of value. These are the real public enemies.

  • Yes what I was saying was that it is a safe unsafe thing, safe at least to them in any way that matters but still problematic to the people around them which is exactly the thing people want at that age. Seemed a perfectly reasonable thing to say, not sure why it's downvoted so much.

  • I think it would not work, people covertly sabotage any drift toward a utopia because they do not want it, it is numbingly dull. Beyond wealth or ease of life or sexual freedom what people really want at a deep and profound level is to have something to complain about. The whole of Reddit is just a mechanism for that, as is all social media, as is the internet, the purpose of language and life. People want to gaze over at one section of society and say look at those fucking idiots I am so much better than them. Then they want to tell people how much better they are and have other people agree, and that sort of thing is banned in utopia.
