Don't put it in a crazy

There's a huge difference between living somewhere and visiting it as a tourist. Most places encourage tourism and are happy to demonstrate their hospitality. Stick to the tourist areas, start interactions by saying "We're tourists from Germany..." and you'll have no problem.
I'm not sure what other people here mean when they deny that there is racism in the US. There are plenty of racists in this country. It's true that they're much less likely to hang you from a tree for being in the wrong neighborhood -- I guess if your standards are that low then we have indeed made great progress. But again, they're generally not going to mess with tourists in tourist areas.
Hey! Did you make it there OK? Have you learned to play cricket yet?
It would be hilarious if there was an existing "196" NodeBB community. And it federated.
- Talk to a trusted friend or relative.
- Ask them to help you set small goals like: 1) identify a couple mental health providers or life coaches or similar, 2) give some of them an initial call, 3) pick 1-2 to follow up with.
- Ask your trusted friend or relative to help you stay on track to accomplish those goals.
I'm just here to point out that Shaggy 2 Dope of Insane Clown Posse has a full Luigi costume

- "local feed" on a smaller pixelfed instance will be smaller
- "global feed" on every pixelfed instance will see all pixelfed and all (image) mastodon posts, but comments made on mastodon posts using pixelfed will not be seen on mastodon
- in theory you can see Lemmy posts and subscribe to Lemmy communities with pixelfed but I haven't got it to work. I've seen someone post from pixelfed to Lemmy but commenting didn't really work.
I wonder if that actually helps their growth tho. When I first started joining lemmy I was put off by the contradictory instructions that it didn't really matter what instance I joined, but IT WAS VITALLY IMPORTANT that I pick the right one (because of "defederation" and "local communities" -- terms that meant nothing to me at the time.) But if you're joining pixelfed and you can choose either the overwhelmingly largest instance or a tiny one, then you're just going to pick the largest one.

Be interesting to see what it looks like a month from now -- the size of plateau and drop-off.
pixelfed.social's starting to slow down. I think the growth's hitting it hard.
Wow awesome. I made another couple comments on your post from pixelfed.social and mastodon.social (as "Terencio")
- my comment made on mastodon.social showed up on pixelfed.social
- my comment made on mastodon.social did NOT show up on https://lemmy.today/post/22411382 Hypothesis: bc nobody on lemmy.today is following that mastodon.social account?
- my comment made on pixelfed.social did NOT show up on mastodon.social. specifically, https://mastodon.social/@MrPistachios@pixelfed.social/113855663395156100 This was a bit of a surprise.
- my comment made on pixelfed.social did NOT show up on https://lemmy.today/post/22411382 Hypothesis: again, bc nobody on lemmy.today is following that pixelfed.social account? Also, I forgot to add the "@sideoftheroad@lemmy.today" part.
Seems like it's better suited for !fediverselore@lemmy.ca and indeed I see db0 mentioned as such on the !yepowertrippinbastards@lemmy.dbzer0.com post that was recently made. This is an interesting case study re the fediverse and communities:
- moving a community to a different instance works differently than it did on r$ddit bc whereas r$ddit only had one set of admins, on the fediverse there are numerous sets of admins -- a fact that is crucial here
- moving to a new instance introduces a new set of defederated instances. for example the people on beehaw who could post on blahaj would no longer be able to do so on world.
- what is a community? the mods? the subscribers? the upvoters? the posters?
- what's the best way to move a community? I think this experience suggests that "by surprise" doesn't always work.
- I think the current blahaj mods could have made a "request for comment" post floating the idea, and let everyone have their say for a week or so. Perhaps at the end of the comment period the current mods could have said: "ok, but if we stay we're going to need more mods" and that would have been a win all around. Or maybe we could have decided "there's enough room for two 196s". Shutting down a safe space -- especially just as life is about to get a lot worse for trans people in the US -- was bound to have pushback. But for all that, I think the mods were acting in good faith.
Yeah... the case I had in mind was similar. A relative inherited some property but also the debt, so they ended up with a tiny amount of money -- it was basically a waste of time. I heard something similar regarding timeshares (which sound like a curse from hell.) But I'm not a lawyer and the laws vary by jurisdiction.
this community is not one that is defined by the instance it is located on
Apparently many people in this community disagree with that statement.
Yeah I don't think you can Follow people on the web interface of Lemmy, maybe on other interfaces. I think it's more a matter of: is the Instance following the pixelfed/mastodon account. If so, then future posts will show up.
OK, I think I see where you're coming from. But lemmy.world already has several meme, shitpost, and microblog repost communities. Why does lemmy.world need c/196? Up til now the fact that it was on blahaj.zone was what made it stand out.
Trump won by 1.5% and the media acts like it was a Reagan-esque 1980 sweep.
Agreed. Every president tries to pretend that they have a mandate. But consider:
Wisconsin has 10 electoral votes. If 14,699 people in Wisconsin had voted differently, Trump would have lost Wisconsin. Fiserv Forum in Milwaukee will fit that many people.
Michigan has 15 electoral votes. If 40,052 people in Michigan had voted differently, Trump would have lost Michigan. Comerica Park in Detroit will fit that many people.
Pennsylvania has 19 electoral votes. If 60,134 people in Pennsylvania had voted differently, Trump would have lost Pennsylvania. Beaver Stadium in University Park will fit that many people.
Without those electoral votes, Trump would have lost the election. That was the size of his victory: 2 stadiums and an arena.

I think I figured it out... consider the following links:
- https://lemmy.world/u/dansup@pixelfed.social
- https://lemmy.today/u/dansup@pixelfed.social
These all refer to the main developer of pixelfed, dansup. The first one is dansup's pixelfed account followed on slrpnk.net where my account is. The second one is dansup's pixelfed account followed on lemmy.world, the biggest lemmy instance. The third one is dansup's pixelfed account followed on lemmy.today, which is your instance.
The account is visible to me on the first two links. HYPOTHESIS: I think that means it's "being followed" by those instances? The account is NOT visible on the last link for me, I just get an error. NeatoBuilds, take a look at the last link: it might give you an error the first time, but HYPOTHESIS: if you refresh, I think it will be visible and that means it's "being followed" on your instance lemmy.today.
Imagine suddenly you no longer exist, poof, from one day to the next there is no more you.
On the last day I'd throw a big party. Then as my time approached I'd say: "Attention everyone! There's something I never told you. My real name is Sergius of Proxima Centauri! I come from another planet! And it is now time for me to beam up to my spaceship. Somebody film this please...." Then I'd sit in a full-lotus position til I disappeared.
No, seriously, I'd just double-check my will and give away most my personal stuff, then go on living like always.
In some cases your debt is passed on to your heirs. Consult a lawyer familiar with your local laws.
But the rest of your life after that is a nightmare.
